The years I spent at the University of Houston molded me and helped to motivate me to make the most of my educational, professional, and extracurricular opportunities. One way that I did this was by making sure to become more involved in club organizations. I joined Health Student Association and helped to mentor other incoming freshman and I played a major part in setting up different health internship fairs as well. I also joined collegiate 100, which I loved because of the strong mentoring aspects for young black children.
I held a leadership role as the Health and Wellness chair in which I coordinated a variety of healthcrare awareness events for my college campus.
I was drawn to this organization and an extension of it called Dream Academ where I assisted each week to help African American boys and girls to realize their potential in the sciences and health care field. There is a significant shortage of occupational therapists that are black women, and I actively desire to be a part of a generation that changes this outlook.
During my senior year of college I became a member of the illustrious Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., an achievement that I have always strived for since I was a little girl.
An important factor regarding my organization is that we pride ourselves on serving our community. Our principles lie within our 5 point pragmatic thrust and one of the pillars are physical and mental health. For one of our service events, we teamed up with habitat for humanity, a Nonprofit organization that helps to build affordable housing for low-income families.
With this project I was able to showcase my leadership skills to help assist with a special project of helping a family that had a child with cebral palsey, who was also taking occupational and physical therapy. We helped to build a home that included modifications by installing a wheelchair ramp, a roll- in flat shower, making sure to include pulls instead of knobs, and also making sure the doorways were wide enough for easy accessibility.
This was such an eye opening experience that made me realize how much a child’s environment influences their development process. As in OT, I'll have to take into an account the resources that are available for a person at home in order for them to continue their therapy outside of the office setting.
