Mathematics: Discipline Awareness Paper

Mathematics is a highly sought-after skill in any career field. As a graduate in mathematics, your knowledge will offer numerous opportunities. Many believe that all the years of mathematics education will not be applied to the real world, but it couldn’t be further from the truth. Having an education in mathematics is akin to learning a whole new language.

The world itself is composed of mathematics and branches into various fields such as science, engineering, and. It is generally split into two categories: pure mathematics and applied mathematics, with many subcategories in both.

Within these categories, there are some hot topic discussions such as math education, mathematical literacy, and the Reimann Hypothesis. There are various associations and journals that will guide you and improve upon your knowledge in the field, publishing researched proofs and theories in the mathematical world.

There are several leading associations in mathematics. The American Mathematical Society (AMS) is one of the top associations in the discipline.

This association “is dedicated to advancing research and connecting the diverse global mathematical community (AMS, 2018)” through their publications and guiding resources. AMS strongly supports and funds mathematical research and is the leading guide for authors seeking publication, providing resources in properly formatting files for publishing. They are also the leading peer-reviewed journal that covers a broad range of mathematics and have been in print since 1891.

If planning to enter in the field of education, an association to consider joining would be The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). Founded in 1920, it is the largest mathematics education organization globally.

They provide classroom resources, publications, conferences, professional development, and grants and awards. NCTM wishes to improve the teaching and learning of mathematics for students, so they value the input of their members. They provide guidance and resources to be able to implement a well-researched method of teaching that supports the learning of each student.

Another association that will guide you in education is the Mathematical Association of America. It is their mission to provide a better understanding of the impact that math has in our world. Their members consist of high school to university teachers, undergraduates, graduates, others in academia, government, and all interested in mathematics (MAA, 2018). They also created the American Mathematics Competition (AMC), which is a competition given at the middle and high school levels to strengthen the mathematical capabilities of the next generation by building problem-solving skills and mathematical knowledge.

The world of mathematics is a male-dominated field, and an association that provides female encouragement in the field is the Association of Women in Mathematics (AWM). Not only are they encouraging females to study and have active careers in mathematics but also “to promote equal opportunity and the equal treatment of women and girls in the mathematical sciences. (AWM, 2010)” Although AWM is an organization geared towards women, men are more than welcome to join. They have programs that provide travel grants that enable women to attend workshops and conferences. AWM provides distinguished lectureships to present positive role models and show the positive contributions women have done in mathematics.

If your focus is in applied mathematics, the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) is an association to follow. They have partnered with computational sciences to solve various real-world problems and “to build cooperation between mathematics and the world of sciences and technology. (SIAM, 2018)” SIAM promotes the advancement, the research, and provide media for the sharing of information in applications of mathematics and computational sciences.

Journals in the mathematics discipline are all peer-reviewed and greatly varies in subjects. It ranges from pure mathematics to applied mathematics, which have varied subjects in each category. Since 1988, the Journal of the American Mathematical Society publish research in all areas of the pure and applied mathematics. It is published quarterly and is available by subscription via print or electronically. All works submitted to the journal are peer-reviewed before being published. Another publication by AMS is Mathematical Reviews was found in 1940. It was a monthly publication, but it ended in 2012, though the publication has grown into MathSciNet, which publishes on a daily.

The oldest journal of mathematics journal is the American Journal of Mathematics, published by John Hopkins University. The journal began in 1878 and “has earned its reputation by presenting pioneering mathematical papers. (Project MUSE, 2018)” It is currently on volume 140 and publishes articles covering in contemporary mathematics. From an older to a more current journal is Mathematics. It is an open-access journal free that is published monthly online by MDPI. The journal provides a forum in all areas of pure and applied mathematics, thorough survey articles on current trends, new theoretical techniques, novel ideas, and new mathematical techniques in different branches of math (MDPI, 2018). Another open-access journal is the International Journal of Statistics and Applied Mathematics. The journal is published bimonthly since May 2016 and focuses on review and research articles from Algebra to Quantum theory.

From journals, proofs are discussed and reviewed. One proof in particular that has been unsolved for nearly 160 years is the Reimann Hypothesis. This hypothesis relates to the distribution of prime numbers, was first proposed by German mathematician Bernhard Reimann in 1859. Prime numbers can only be divided by one or themselves and become less frequent with greater gaps on the number line. To understand the distribution, Reimann found that it lies within another set of numbers, the zeros of a function called the zeta function, which has both real and imaginary inputs.

Reimann then created a formula that calculates how many prime numbers there are, up to a certain point, and at the intervals the prime numbers occur (Schembri, 2018). Over the past century, Reimann’s hypothesis has proven to work for large prime numbers, but remains to provide irrefutable proof out to infinity. Anyone who is able to provide this proof will win a million-dollar reward in solving this Millennium Prize problem provided by the Clay Mathematics Institute. Many believe that the 89-year-old mathematician Michael Atiyah, who claims to have solved this mystery, has provided unreliable associations and that his proof would be unsuccessful. If his proof is correct or not it will take years of review before it is accepted by the Clay Mathematics Institute (Freeman, 2018).

With mathematicians peer-reviewing proofs, The United States is dealing with how poorly young students are doing in math. Overall, U.S. students rank internationally in 38th place out of 71 countries according to the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) in 2015 (Venezky, 2018). Another progress report released in 2017 by the U.S. Department of Education called the National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP) showed that only 33 percent of eighth-graders were at grade level proficiency in mathematics (Venezky, 2018). So why are students doing so poorly in math? Some say since we continue to teach a curriculum that is fast-paced and with such a strong emphasis on exams students are having difficulty retaining the learned information. Many students also do not learn information the same way as others, so we may need to have different teaching methods at each level. We also haven’t changed the way math is taught since 2013, so why do we continue with the same method? There needs to be a better foundation of math for young students to be able to build a mathematical language.

Like learning a new language, math should be viewed the same way. Living in this 21st-century math in the workplace is nearly inescapable. With nearly 1 in 3 students unable to demonstrate mathematical literacy, the new language of the digital workplace. Mathematical literacy involves “translating mathematical concepts and knowledge into plain-language insights, solutions, or products for employers or clients, which carries significant implications for our overall approach to education and workforce training.” While technology is also advancing in the workforce we should apply digital technologies in a classroom setting in all subjects. To conclude we must find ways to improve the quality of mathematical literacy among the population today.

In the field of mathematics, the most commonly used style by authors is LaTeX (pronounced “Lah-tech” or “Lay-tech”). It is a software that provides high-quality typesetting, though it is not a word processor. LaTeX allow authors to focus on the content and not to worry about the appearance of their document. It was developed in the 1980s by Leslie Lamport, and had a major overhaul in 1994, with LaTeX2e (Why LaTeX, n.d.). It is highly recommended to use LaTeX if you wish to publish any works in a journal, book, or article. AMS provides an author’s resource center that provides beneficial information on steps to write and publish your work.

Knowledge is generated through the education of teachers and professors, and the continuous practice of math. Students must gain an understanding on how to achieve problem-solving skills and interpret the studies of formulas and proofs. A knowledge of mathematical literacy must be gained to fully understand the works published in journals, books, and articles. There is research being conducted in a wide range of subjects from pure and applied mathematics.

Graduating with a discipline in mathematics has its benefits and is a rewarding choice. You have learned a beneficial language and are so many directions that you are able to take this skill in. There is the pure mathematic that studies abstract concepts and is separate from the physical world, it is more theoretical. Applied math deals more with physical real-world problems. It may be used in science to understand reality and the laws of nature. Whenever you decide to write your research on a proof, there are several resources to help in your writing. Whichever path you choose, in this day and age your knowledge will lead to an abundant, bright, and long career in your future endeavors.
