Making new friends

Throughout everyday life, we encounter numerous events that impact the way we act or the decisions we make and among us, some experiences certain event that changes their life completely. For me, that turning-point happened during my transfer to a new school a few years ago. This was my first time moving to a new environment and I believe in many ways it helped me become the person I am today.

The news of the transfer got to me a few weeks after I had recently finished my second year at my old school.

My father received a business opportunity and had to relocate, so I have no choice but to move along with him. I was terrified at the idea of abandoning everything to start over and frustrated by the way that this all occurred against my will. Adapting to the new school system was not the difficult part, it was losing important friends and teacher that was the hardest.

It was during this period that I felt the most pressure and anxiety. And as I was trying to get my head around moving, that day came, my first ever day at the new school. Looking into my class, seeing all the unfamiliar faces and seeing them talking cheerfully as they are caught up with one another made me extremely out of place and awkward. I felt abject despair of making any friend in class as I desperately waited for someone to notice and converse with me, but to no avail.

Making friends at my old school has always been an easy task as the school is situated in a gated community where most of the students already met each other before, now that I have to make friends from scratch the task is immensely difficult. Initially, I intended to see through the school year without the need for friends. But as this then continued for a couple of days, I realized it is impossible to do so. That is why I decided to gather up my courage to try to talk to people in my class, and to my surprise, they all turned out much more friendly than I expected. I was glad that some of them even share the same interest in books and movies with me.

As it turns out, making new friends was not as hard as I thought it was going to be. Even though it took me quite some time to get informal with each other, I went from not being able to open up to anyone to being able to adapt and make new changes to myself. Changing school turned out to be a great experience and an opportunity for me to be more confident and positive with everything around me. It has given me the certainty to realize that I can make new friends, pursue interests and hobbies regardless of my environment.

Ultimately, what I got from this experience is that nothing is ever permanent, life is full of challenges and setbacks, had I continued my study at my old school, I would have missed out on the amazing friends and memories at this new place
