Gustav Hasford was a Marine Corps Vietnam War veteran and author of the 1979 novel The Short-Timers, which was adapted into the 1987 film Full Metal Jacket. Hasford was born in 1947 in Mobile, Alabama, and enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1964, at the age of 17. He served as a combat correspondent in Vietnam from 1965 to 1966, and was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. After his discharge from the Marines, Hasford attended the University of Oklahoma on the G.I. Bill, and earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism in 1970. He then moved to Berkeley, California, where he worked as a journalist and began writing The Short-Timers.
The novel, which is set in Vietnam and follows a group of Marines from their training at Parris Island to their deployment in Vietnam, was published in 1979. Hasford’s second novel, The Phantom Blooper, was published in 1990. Hasford died of cancer in January 1993, at the age of 45.
