R. Lee Ermey, a former Marine drill sergeant turned actor, stars as the brutal Sgt. Hartman in Stanley Kubrick’s Vietnam War film Full Metal Jacket. Ermey was hand-picked by the director for the role after impressing him with his performance in The Boys in Company C.The film follows a group of Marine recruits from their basic training at Parris Island through their deployment in Vietnam. The recruits are subjected to Hartman’s cruelty and abuse, which is designed to break them down and turn them into killing machines. One recruit, Private Joker, emerges as the film’s protagonist. He is a wise-cracking smart-ass who Hartman takes a particular liking to. Joker is eventually promoted to squad leader and is sent to Vietnam, where he and his men are assigned to provide security for a TV news crew.During a patrol, Joker’s unit is ambushed and he is the only one to make it out alive. He is then reassigned to a Marine unit that is searching for a missing sniper. Joker eventually finds the sniper, a woman named Private First Class Animal Mother. The film ends with Joker and Animal Mother killing a Viet Cong soldier who is trying to surrender. Joker then famously utters the line, What is your major malfunction, numbnuts?””
