A chip off the old block, Jaren Jackson Jr only made it to the National Basketball Association (NBA) in 2018 and is already packing on great prospects in the big league. The power forward/center has been remarked for his mind-blowing blocking skills which earned him a lot of recognition from the right quarters.
Prior to the NBA draft, Jackson left a print on the records as one of the top players in the 2017 college graduating class. For his intriguing performances, the baller was named 5th best player in the nation by Scout.com, 1st in his position, in addition to taking the 2nd overall position in the Midwest region.
Again, while 247 Sports ranked him 7th nationwide and 4th in his position, he was given the 8th spot in the ESPN 100, coming in at #2 in his position and the same position regionally. With such decorated profile already on his record, much is expected from the American professional basketball player who was drafted 4th overall by the Memphis Grizzlies in the NBA Draft of 2018.He also helped the United States national basketball team to bring the gold home at the FIBA 2016 World Championships.
Let's get to know more about Jaren Jackson Jr, including details about his early life and other interesting facts about the pro baller.
Named after his father, Jaren was born on September 15, 1999, in Carmel IN. The names of his parents are Jaren (father) and Terri Jackson (mother). While his mother's occupation is not stated, his father is a veteran in the game.
He played basketball in his heyday, making waves as a sharpshooting guard in the NBA during a career which lingered for more than a decade. Apparently, he passed on the talent to his son who began playing early in life. In high school, he started off with the team at Park Tudor school and wrapped it up at La Lumiere School where his senior year was spent. At Park Tudor, he averaged 10 points a game, 6 rebounds a game, and 3 blocks a game. He also bagged two IHSAA state basketball championships before leaving for La Lumiere where he started for their varsity squad. In the end institutions like Michigan State, Notre Dame, Indiana, Purdue, Maryland, among many others lined up for him.
His rather short college career was eventually spent with the Michigan State Spartans. With the team, he debuted on November 10, 2017, recording 13 points and a season-high 13 rebounds. The feat was achieved in a blowout 98–66 victory over the North Florida Ospreys. He would follow it up with a record season-high (at the time) 19 points in an 88–81 loss to the Duke Blue Devils.
December 5 saw Jaren Jackson Jr record 11 points in addition to a career-high 8 blocks in a 62–52 win over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. He then bagged 17 points followed by more career-high 13 rebounds in an 88–63 win over the Southern Utah Thunderbirds. Early in 2018, he continued on his record-setting streak with yet another then-season-high 21 points, 11 rebounds and 6 blocks in an 87–74 win over Illinois Fighting Illini. The next month, he raised the bars again with a career-high 27 points in an 87–57 win over the Minnesota Golden Gophers.
Riding on the wave of his eventful season at Michigan State, Jaren Jackson Jr scooped the Big Ten's Defensive Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year, Big Ten's All-Freshman Team and the All-Big Ten's Third Team titles. Nevertheless, he decided on April 2 that college is no place for his skills and declared for the 2018 NBA Draft.
During the 2018 NBA Draft, Jaren Jackson Jr made the cut with the 4th overall pick, selected by the Memphis Grizzlies on June 21, 2018. Subsequently, he entered into a multi-year rookie scale contract with the side.
