How WW1 Lead to WW2: The Effects of Treaty of Versailles

Categories: Treaty of Versailles

WWI was a war allies fighting against other allies. On one side was France, England, Italy, Russia, and later on in 1917 America. On the other side was the Central Powers who included Germany, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire, Bulgaria. This all started because the assasination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand that was the leader of Austria. This caused Austria-Hungary to declare war on Serbia. After this war was over they created the Treaty of Versailles and that caused WWII, because the terms were too harsh in military/territorial terms, it was to harsh in economic/financial terms and the responsibility they had to take.

The terms they made Germany agree to were to harsh for their military and territorial terms.

Germany had lots of territory taken from them like Lorraine-Alsace, some of the corridor, and Northern Schleswig. Germany also was not allowed to have military in Rhineland and it was administrated by the League of Nations. Germany is desperate and needs hope so Adolf Hiter takes over to bring them back like they were before war..

Hitler says,“No notion can remove this hand from its throat except by sword”. Hitler wasn’t scared and he thought he was a hero. Hitler didn’t like being beat and responded by saying,“ Only childish and naive minds can lull themselves in the idea that they can bring about a correction of Versailles by wheeding and begging.

The treaty was to harsh in economical and financial terms. Germany had to pay 132 billion gold marks in 1921 but was reduced to 112 billion gold marks in 1929. The gold marks equal to $341 billion dollars in the U.S today.

Germany was angry and little humiliated because of how much they had to pay and they really didn’t have no money.“Not counting American loans, Germans pays only 2 billion marks over the next three years”. Germany stays trying to pay the money they owe until 1933 where,“Hitler comes to power. Stops all reparation payments”.

The Germans were mad because of the responsibility they had to take. Germany was angry and didn’t like the treaty.“But most Germans saw it as an atrocitus injustice, an evil thing which must be destroyed. According to Laurence Moyer,“Much of the excutation within Germany arising from the Nazi regime arose the way in which Hitler restored a sense of pride, reawakened a sense of self-respect, forcing the world to look at Germany anew.” Germany listened to Hitler because they were angry and desperate for a better life, they also had nothing to lose. This led to the rise of the Nazi’s and sooner or later WWII.

After this war was over they created the Treaty of Versailles and that caused WWII, because the terms were too harsh in military/territorial terms, it was to harsh in economic/financial terms and the responsibility they had to take. This war was very devastating causes about twenty one million people to die. I feel like the treaty was way too harsh to Germany and they shouldn’t be the one to take all the blame when there was other countries with them. They did the most damage but they all should’ve been punished the same because they all tried to do the same they just couldn’t get there.
