According to the Holland Code Career Test, my career type is the helper type. I would agree that this career type suits me because I enjoy being involved in volunteer activities and I find investing in the lives of others to be very enjoyable and rewarding. I am also an introverted person who likes intimate, close, healing relationships with people. These are things that the helper type would typically enjoy, according to the career test report. In addition to scoring high for the helper type, I scored very high for the creative type, moderately high for the thinking type, persuading type, and organizing type, and I scored very low for the building type.

One of the careers the test recommended was a child care worker position. The primary interest type for this career is creativity, but the helping type also applies. This career includes caring for children in the absence of their parents. Some child care workers also prepare children for kindergarten and some tutor the children as well.

The median salary for this position is $22,290.00, and the growth level is at 7%. The education for this position varies depending on location and employer. Some employers require a degree in early childhood education, while others do not even require a high school diploma. This position does have some appeal to me because I like children, but the salary is too low for me to seriously consider it for a career. I have thought about this position before, but as a job rather than a career.

However, this position only somewhat fsit into my work values. I greatly value working conditions, and the child care position does not typically provide benefits and is not completely secure. Children grow older and no longer need a child care worker, so employees would need to be able to adjust and search for new jobs every few years. However, I also greatly value relationships, and the position of a child care specialist includes many opportunities to build relationships with children and their lives.

Another career recommended for me by this test is the position of mental health counselor or marriage and family therapist. The only interest type listed for this career is helping. These workers diagnose as well as treat mental illnesses and help clients understand their problems to improve their lives. The median salary for this position is $48,790.00, and the growth is at 23%. At least a master’s degree in psychology, social work, counseling, or another mental health field is required for this career. However, this type of employee also usually needs to be licensed as well. This career appeals to me greatly because it involves helping people and the pay and growth rate are very reasonable. I have considered this position before, and I think I will continue to do so. This position would also satisfy my work values as it can provide working conditions with benefits and job security as well as relationships. The relationship aspect is especially important for this type of career.

Another career recommended for me was a music director or composer. The primary interest type is creating. However, it also includes helping and persuading. These workers lead music groups both during performances and recordings. They also write and arrange music. The median salary for this position is $50,590.00, and the growth rate is at 6%. Requirements for education vary for this position, but, generally, at least a bachelor’s degree in music theory, music composition, or conducting is preferred. This career option does appeal to me because I have been a musician for about nine years and would love to use that in my future somehow, so I have also considered this career many times. This job would only somewhat fit into my career values, however. Music is a wonderful way to generate relationships with other musicians, but there is not reliable job security.

The results from this career test did differ from my results from O-Net online. My O-Net results included education positions as well as physician assistant positions. I am more satisfied with the Holland Career Search results than the O-Net online results, because the O-Net results did not fit with my personality as well as the Holland Career Search results did. I did not receive many psychology results from the O-Net website, but I did receive more of them from the Holland test. I do feel secure in my decision to pursue psychology despite the O-Net results because I was not attracted to the positions that I was presented from that website and I did not feel that they were fitting for my personality. The two websites did conflict in results, but it did not make me reconsider my college major.
