Essay Malgorzata Muserovich - star

In their essay, many of my colleagues will certainly present the great names of serious literature, commonly considered to be beautiful, relevant and important. In my opinion, plunging into authors such as Tokarczuk or Satrapi is the easy way. Considering that not only do such authors deserve the honour of being called writers of the century, in my essay Małgorzata Musierowicz is the star.

Małgorzata Musierowicz was born in Poznań, in Jeżyce district, on 9 January 19451, where she lived for most of her life.

2 In 1968, she graduated from the Academy of Visual Arts at the Faculty of Painting and Graphic Arts - Diploma in Applied Graphics - Book Graphic Design.3 As she could not find a job as a graphic designer after graduation, she decided to write a book for herself, which she would later illustrate. This is how the first book from the Jeżycjada series 'Małomówny I rodzina' was written.

In the beginning, the book was not part of the Jeżycjada, but the author received so many letters asking for recognition as part of the famous series that she agreed.

After the correction of the first edition, the book was added to the official list of books from the Jeżycjada series.4 Musierowicz lists as her favourite activities those that are mainly related to books, that is: 'reading books, writing books, buying books, inventing books, writing about books, buying books, searching for books on antique bookshelves, collecting books, borrowing books from friends, lending books to friends, talking about books, putting books on new shelves, binding old books into new covers'.

As a favourite object Musierowicz names a book and the author does not have one but she has hundreds of her favourite books.

As she says: 'I consider it a great gift from heaven that I am allowed to deal professionally with a phenomenon that I love: a book. Since I was a child, I've known that all I need to be happy is a small home printing house - and here I have it, in the form of a computer.”

When it comes to music, she loves classical music. Further, she mentions that her favourite landscape is a lake in the forest and the vehicle is a bicycle. There is no favourite colour as she likes all of them. Her passion, apart from the one related to books, is the flower garden, where she has.

her most beloved roses, fairies and tulips. As far as trees are concerned, the only one for her is pine, and the bird is a nightingale. Her favourite creature is a child. Musierowicz describes his work in a very illustrative way: 'I take a lot of notes and put them in a briefcase, or hang them around the table, on shelves. And then I just write, which is a long, tedious and tiring process. It also looks unusual: just, there's a woman sitting there in a random dress and staring into the space outside the window, then typing on the keyboard and staring at the monitor. She sits, sits, she has pain in her back, neck and legs. What she writes, she will write it down or throw it away. She gets up, comes in, goes out into the garden, looks at the roses, has remorse and then goes back to work. She will sit, sit, sit, bite peanuts or almonds, what she will write, she will write it down or throw it away, and so on and on. Such a monotonous work goes on for months, but brings a lot of satisfaction and joy.”

Małgorzata Musierowicz is a highly regarded author of a novel for young people. Most of her books from the Jeżycjada series have received a distinction, honour, nomination or award. The list is very long, here I will list just a few of her awards, the rest is available on Małgorzata Musierowicz's website.

In 2018 Musierowicz was nominated for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, and in 2017 she was awarded the Medal of Merit of the Polish Society of Book Publishers. In 2010 - a special award of the ABCXXI Foundation - Whole Poland Reads to Children - for lifetime achievement, in 2008 she received a lifetime achievement award from the Polish Section of IBBY. And these are only the recent awards. As early as 1979 she won first place and the 'Golden Goats' award at the IV Biennial of Art for Children in Poznań for 'Szósta Klepka'. 'Kwiat Kalafiora' was inscribed on Andersen's List of Honour by the IBBY jury at UNESCO. And 'Noelka' was recognised as the book of the year by the Polish section of IBBY. Małgorzata Musierowicz's books have been translated into many European and Japanese languages. They also became the basis for film adaptations ('Kłamczucha').10

Małgorzata Musierowicz's books are written with a dose of humour. However, in a very subtle way (in the first parts of the series) the author smuggles information about social and political changes in our country. This is very evident in 'Opium w Rosole', where broken dialogues and sentences tell us a lot about what happened in Poland between 1981 and 1982:

  • ' The plate is waiting for my husband,' she explained with an equal voice. - For the father of these four ladies here.
  • He's at the end of the world too? - She asked Genowefa with her own tact.
  • Oh, no. No. He's in Poland. As always, the grey lady replied so quietly that you could barely hear her.
  • So when is he coming to dinner?! - she wanted to know Genowefa's impatient. But she didn't get the answer again.'

For the first time, Musierowicz's book was read by me as a girl in primary school, now, more than 20 years after finishing primary school, not as a little girl but as an adult woman, those books were a great consolation for me in pandemic times. Musierowicz is still writing her series, but in my humble opinion the first books in the series were the best because they show me the world, that is not known to me. Coming back to the Borejko family is one of the greatest experiences, because like no one else they can soothe me. While reading Musierowicz's books one has the impression that one returns to old friends who never left, they are always eager to meet, have a cup of tea and talk about everything and nothing at the beautiful wooden kitchen table.
