Education is a right not a privilege

What if the cure for cancer is trapped in the mind of someone who can't afford education? Everyone deserves the right to access an education in all parts of the world. It is simply not fair that people can't get an education because they can't afford it. If all people had equal opportunities for education the world would be so much better and everyone would benefit as people would have better jobs and would be paying more tax to the government, which would benefit the country.

A good education means a better job, better opportunities and a better life. Free education is so important to poor families because it's a whole new opportunity for them and it could be the catalyst to pull them out the poverty cycle. This would only be possible if one of their offspring or if they had the chance to get an education and get a good career going and earn enough money to provide for their family.

People may argue students could get loans or scholarships but it's so tough to get so people just forget getting an education and work smaller jobs they may not even like just so they are able to scrape by. Education is also important for poor people because it increases a persons chances of having a healthy life, reduces maternal deaths, and combats diseases such as HIV and AIDS because people are educated about these things and how to prevent it all.

Education could prevent diseases in developing counties if the people were able to gain access to it. That knowledge could be the thing that could save them.

In 2014, the coalition cut off the education maintenance allowance and tripled university fees in England after coming into power and questioned how they were going to fund education for the entire nation. However Germany was able to scrap fees for both national and international students so why can't the UK do the same? Also in 2014, students protested at Westminster in an attempt to change the education system policies. A protestor said, " We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to study further, no matter what their background. Today we'll be marching for free education, to abolish tuition fees, to fight the cuts in the education sector, and to challenge the marketization of education." Following what the student who marched said just shows how education is a way of making money, a business for these universities and colleges, which is not acceptable in my opinion. This is also having a negative effect on young people as they may think it's a waste of money and they would just be better off working earlier instead of completing their education. If education was free for everyone people would be educated regardless of their background or home life situations and would have the same opportunities in life as someone who could afford it.

If a person were able to complete their education and get a good job they would be able to contribute back to the government by paying tax. This should help the economy grow and improve the country they live in. People may argue that if education were free, the amount of tax paid would also increase. However people should think about how it would help improve their country and their children even as they would not have to worry about paying their school fees. If students were able to go through school without worrying about paying school fees by working during school, more people would want to complete their education and get into the career of their choice and again pay tax to the government helping to boost the economy. Also if all 18-24 year olds were in university or college then the unemployment rate would decrease by 2 million and fewer people would be in need of government assistance as they would settle making enough money to provide for themselves and their families and would not have to rely on schemes such as benefits.

Education for having a better life is not the only reason why it's so important it is also because it has been proven that people with higher education are more likely to have a higher level of health and happiness. This could prevent suicides or people having mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety, etc. and they would be worry free. More people would start families, as they would be more financially stable because they were educated fully and got a good job. Also having a better job and a better income would mean the family would be able to easily purchase healthy food, they would be able to pay for health services if free healthcare wasn't available in the country and would be able to pay for transportation. However someone who didn't have a good career because they couldn't afford it would be eating unhealthy cheap things and would not be educated on nutrition, they would also possibly not have enough money to cover healthcare costs or transportation costs, this could result in them being physically or mentally ill and stressed about things constantly.

Education plays a huge part in stopping many people committing crimes. Many people who had rough backgrounds or upbringings or were perhaps socially deprived when growing up are more likely to break the law or commit serious crimes and even worse they may not even have an access to an education where they can be helped because it was too expensive or a higher education that would take their focus of committing crimes and more on to studying because they can't afford it. This would mean they would not have a good job or possibly be unemployed also meaning they would not have a good source of income. This could lead them to relying on committing crimes in order to get some money. For example they may sell drugs or rob people. This cycle would continue possibly with their children and their grandchildren and so on. A possible solution for this would of course be free education. It is proven that people with higher education have other characteristics that make them less criminally minded. The latest figures published by the prison Reform Trust revealed that more than half (51%) the number of people in prison have the literacy skills of an 11 year old. This suggests how uneducated people are because of not free education.

I am lucky enough to live in a country where I can access an education for free. Even I was underprivileged and could not afford an education I could still go to school. The Scottish government have done a great thing by prioritising education as many people are able to study whatever they like, enter their field of interest, make a good source of income and give back to the government through paying tax. If this was the case in every country the country would not have such high crime rates, or have students worrying about paying for their school fees or have a low source of income which would make it hard to provide for their family. Everyone in all parts of the world should be given equal opportunities and have a good chance at becoming something great as for all we know they could cure cancer.
