Disadvantages Faced by Migrants in the Legal System Due to Cultural Diversity

Migrants in any country face a number of disadvantages. Their disadvantages are grouped into 4 groups. They are an economic disadvantage, a social disadvantage, an educational disadvantage and also a political disadvantage.

Firstly the economic disadvantage is very obvious and is experienced by most migrants and refugees. They must flee from their own country because of war and during this they do not have any time to gather money so that they can use in another country and they can not even gather enough resources for their journey.

Most immigrants come from third world countries and must use all their money on getting out of the country. Therefore when reaching Australia, they are very disadvantaged economically. They not only are disadvantaged when they leave their home country but also even after settling in Australia. Immigrants have trouble finding jobs and if upon finding one the job is either low paying or low skilled in the work force such as working in a factory.

They may experience these difficulties because of their lack of English, or because of the lack of skill in their home country and also it could be because of discrimination. Many immigrants even if they have been in Australia for many years, are finding it very difficult to make ends meet. They usually have many children and must rely on government agencies for their income. They cannot enjoy the luxuries of life and cannot even buy gifts for their children. Immigrants will face this disadvantage as long as they come into Australia.

Secondly immigrants face a social disadvantage.

When they move from their home country to another where they do not know anybody they will of course be disadvantaged. They will have to build up new relationships with people and this usually occurs in areas where there are people from the same culture and race. We can see this in Australia where sections of Sydney are branded Asian such as Cabramatta and Arab such as Lakemba. While this may be true the fact is that immigrants must move to the same area because they know that they can communicate there. Immigrants do not have any social standing unless they are in their own community.

There is a lot of racism and discrimination to immigrants. For example when a crime takes place and names of those who committed that crime are foreign such as the names Tran, Nguyen, Mohammed, Ali, immediately the white Australian community relates it to the towns where these ethnic names usually belong. This causes the community living there to have a bad reputation when really most of them do the right thing. They face these problems because of the language barrier, class structures and prejudice. Immigrants also face other disadvantages.

An educational disadvantage is common among immigrants. Many left there countries with their parents as children a long time ago and did not finish their education in their countries. They came to Australia and needed English classes. These classes went for a few months and only taught the basics of English. They only taught English not mathematics or science. They did not teach the students any ethics such as those according to British manners when eating. This lack of education was carried on to their children in a way.

Even though their children are sent to Australian schools, their children can have to ask their teachers when they have problems with school work. When they need help at home the parents do not know much English and cannot help their children with homework and this calls for tutoring which costs money. The education disadvantage is caused because immigrants do not have enough money to get further education or because they are living in a poor study environment or it is caused by cultural and geographical factors. This educational disadvantage leads to problems in the childrens future when they have trouble finding a job with good pay. Education is one disadvantage facing immigrants.

Finally the last disadvantage which immigrants have has to do with politics. In parliament today there are few immigrants even though there has been a somewhat large increase from before. They do not have the chance to represent their people or cannot influence decisions made in parliament which may affect their ethnicity. This may be because of the fact that there is a lot of discrimination in politics and because they have few opportunities to participate and also they do not understand the political system fully and may not want to join because of their past experiences with politics.

There are many disadvantages that are encountered by immigrants such as economical, social, educational and also political.
