When I first announced my decisions for community service, my parents bewildered expression did not escaped unnoticed. It was not unusual though. Born in a capitalist family of Pakistan, where money rules important decisions like choice of career and marriage, the idea of community service was unspoken, never thought of. Unwillingly, my father agreed but he stipulated that neither my studies nor my school life be affected
As a student in my school, I have been involved in various forms of volunteer work especially which involves providing assistance to weak students who are unable to cope up with their studies. I had to sacrifice a lot for it especially my social life and school's extracurricular but the work was rewarding. A couple of times I was disdained for my activities and accused of "lacking ambition" but I cleaved to my ideas. Even though the world has progressed so much, our society's mentality still rest on the fact that good studies are used for monetary purpose and those who lag behind it receive inferior treatment from his adults and peers
Since the beginning I had not accepted this idea. I believe every child is gifted; if some just open their gifts earlier do not mean that those who have not does not possess those gifts. Such was a case with me. If I were to describe myself in two words, that will be "late bloomer". Born as an asthma patient, I was a natural disappointment to my parents. In a society where men still receive preference over women, I was born a girl and worse infected with asthma. Not only these academic results were inappropriate but also my extracurricular were insignificant. I had lead the life of an ignored child until grade 11 when I scored straight A's in CIE and was among the top 5% of the class to do so. Not only this, I was also among the top 1% students of my class to score straight A's in AS Level. It was only then, my presence gained some recognition and I joined the so-called "high achievers of the school"
But my ideas always clashed with them. At that time, all of my peers boasted about winning the national physics competition or the accounting contest, I had prided on my ability to teach, to help. I remember the time when I taught my maid's daughter English. She was disdained by my peers because of her inability to speak English and was not allowed to join our group. Since my own parents agreed with their behavior, I was unable to defend her from their cruel remarks. However I resolved to change this. From that day on, I tutored her on English classes. Within a year she was well conversant with rudimentary English but her colloquial deficiencies still lingered on. I made her watch English movies to overcome her conversational deficiencies and within a year she was accustomed of spoken English. My hard work produced prolific results when she scored a 7.5 band in IELTS paper and was appointed as an English teacher in a government school. Who could have thought that a girl with such a bleak future will turn into respected personnel like a teacher?
I would not say that efforts left my studies unaffected. I skipped a lot of state held competitions especially ones which were conducted during her IELTS exam and also an invaluable opportunity to be a member of student's council but what I had achieved is far more gratifying than these. I had not only shaped her future but also a generation who would come after her. Had I not helped her, she and her children were doomed to suffer in illiteracy because she belongs from a place where rays of education has rarely enlightened I believe in success, ambition and hard work but I also believe in helping others for a nation cannot succeed with its few inhabitants at its top notch position and others struggling to survive. I do not wish to demean my adults whose advice is to focus more on success by ignoring ethics.
I want to ask these 'enlightened people and 'respected' people that how can I cheat on someone's rights to achieve my objectives and what will I do next when I have achieved my targets. Since we are born, we are taught that 'life is a race and we have to compete with each other'. I ask them where we are running towards, is amassing wealth our ultimate aim. And even when we have amassed wealth, what to do next? Certainly the richest are not the happiest ones. I ask them how you can be happy when you look around yourself and observe complete misery. We are running aimlessly to amass wealth, to widen the gap between rich and poor instead of abridging it. No wonder why social unrest is so common in our area. We are digging the well of our downfall by our hands and we are receiving appreciation for it!
In the end, everyone in this world has some achievements; winning a competition or getting into a college might be one's lifetime achievement. But my greatest achievement is to shape someone's future, to bring a smile on someone's face, to make the world a better place to live.
