Because of Procrastination, It’s Hard to Be Truly Successful

Resistance is a part of life that every person contains. It’s the invisible force that pushes us away from the work that needs to be done. Some people experience it through procrastinating to the last second, having our emotions get in the way of whatever is important, or just fearing that others will oppose our work. Resistance comes in many forms which affect our daily lives by preventing us from achieving the goals that we need and want to fulfill.

Procrastination takes away a big part of our lives, working hand in hand with resistance. It affects our days through taking away time that could’ve been used to be productive. We then end up rationalizing with ourselves to not feel guilty. This causes us to avoid our work and only build bad habits and stress of not accomplishing anything. Because of procrastination, it’s hard to be truly successful. In the book War of Art, it tells us, “The most pernicious aspect of procrastination is that it can become a habit.

We don’t just put off our lives today; we put them off till our deathbeds.” Procrastination only brings stress and unfulfilled work upon our lives.

The only solution to not procrastinate is to just sit down and start the work. One could split up the work into chunks so it seems less overwhelming and just do a little at a time. That person would then soon develop a habit of work. One thing that factors into the reason of procrastinating is simply just not being in the mood to do work.

Feeling unhappy and feeling the need to be healed is a form of resistance. Resistance causes us to feel unhappy and like crap, even causing us to do sinful things to avoid this feeling. Sometimes we feel as if we need to be healed and happy before doing any work.

In the War of Art, it says, “The concept in all these environments seem to be that one needs to complete his healing before he is ready to do his work. This way of thinking is a form of resistance.” We will always be struggling with something, so waiting to heal causes us to never achieve anything we may need to achieve in our daily lives. One solution is to think of our work life being separate from our emotional life unless our work requires our emotions. Pushing things off just because we feel “sad” will only make us more upset. Just start the work and ideas will come, influence will stir, and a productive force will push us further into the work. The unhappy and unfulfilled feeling people get from resistance may also cause us to become critics and in turn make others to have unachieved goals in their life.

Resistance can take form as critics, whether it's criticizing or being criticized. Other critics lower our self-esteem from telling us we’re not doing our job correctly. Other critics can turn us to become critics ourselves. Us being critics shows resistance because it shows that we see others living accomplished lives while we don’t. In the book The War of Art, it says, “He takes external criticism to heart, allowing it to trump his own belief in himself and his work. Resistance loves this.” Critics can give us the mindset of giving up on our work and never achieving what we once dreamed of achieving. That, in turn, causes us to be critics and affect other’s lives too. My solution would be to just not criticize others. We should worry about our own lives and reaching our goals. Be grateful with what we have and work with it. If we’re always caught up in another person’s life, we’ll never fully achieve our own.

Every day, our lives are affected by Resistance in different ways. Procrastinating, feeling ‘out of it,’ and taking critics to the heart can all lead us to never achieving any goals. The thing is, we all have the potential to be successful and productive. It doesn’t matter whether or not someone is rich, poor, broken, or old. That potential we have to produce work and success never leaves. The only way to overcome resistance is for us to forgive ourselves and just sit down and do the work. Eventually, we could develop a good habit of work. We don’t need to feel healed to follow our dreams. Separate work life from emotional life if we have to. And instead of letting critics break down our self-esteem, we should either ignore them or use them to learn and grow into an ultimate successful person.
