Artificial Intelligence is Friend or Foe

Categories: FriendMy Best Friends

There is a reason that so many science fiction movies revolve around the idea of artificial intelligence. How will artificial intelligence grow to affect us in the future? Why are people like Elon Musk, Joe Rogan, Isaac Asimov and Paul Ford so focused on worrying about artificial intelligence? Artificial intelligence (AI) is all around people everywhere but the real question is: in the future, will we be living with robots as friends or will we be fighting them for our lives and control of how we do things? America needs to consider the danger of artificial intelligence and how it will affect us in the future.

Artificial intelligence is becoming a big threat.

Many people are worried about how AI will develop over time. Elon Musk is known for thinking the future can come faster. While speaking at MIT in 2014 he called artificial intelligence “humanities biggest threat” (Piper). “As AI gets probably much smarter than humans, the relative intelligence ratio is probably similar to that between a human and a cat, maybe bigger.” Musk added.

“I do think we need to be very careful about the advancement of AI.” (2018) Artificial intelligence, if not taken care of properly, could turn into a very dangerous mistake. People say “learn from your mistakes” but a journalist Maureen Dowd says that we don’t want to learn from our mistake with artificial intelligence (Piper). Joe Rogan talks with Elon Musk about why he’s worried about AI and Elon says, “Something’s going to happen, and we aren’t going to be able to control it.

It will be very tempting to use AI as a military weapon.” He adds “The danger is going to be humans using AI against each other.” (2018)

Isaac Asimov, the first to focus of robots and artificial intelligence, not only predicted what would happen with robots but how to control them too. He created three laws, or rules to implant into the robot's head. The three rules are, “A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. A robot must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.” (Asimov, I. 1942, Runaround, Bell publishers) Asimov thought many years ago that if a robot has these rules, nobody would be hurt. If they don’t, however, that may change. Arthur C. Clark a very close friend of Asimov’s predicted the future too, he believed that computers would develop a mind and a consciousness of their own. Arthur C. Clark created a legendary movie called “2001: A Space Odyssey”. The movie in a short explanation is about astronauts that are sent on a mysterious mission, their ship's computer system, HAL, begins to display increasingly strange behavior, leading up to a tense showdown between man and machine that results in a mind-boggling trek through space and time. This caused an up rise to many people because United States and the Soviet Union wanting to see who’s rocket ships were the best -- was at its peak. The latest developments were reported in the news media almost daily (Snider 2010). Not only did people get a thrilling movie to watch, but also probably a bit of worry. When this movie was seen, it caused a type of curiosity of, “could this really happen?”

The intelligence of machines will soon be above that of humans (Ford). If machines are already doing what they are now, when they are even smarter, what will they be able to do? “Stephen Hawkings, alongside other notable Technologists including Elon Musk and Bill Gates have warned of what tremendous harm AI could bring to mankind despite the many possibilities it offers,” says Plus TV Africa. A video proving that AI is skyrocketing, says that 4 robots killed 29 scientists in japan by “metal bullets”. The worst part is that the scientist took out two of them, took apart the third, but the fourth robot started to restore itself and somehow connected to an orbiting satellite to gather information on how to rebuild itself even stronger than before. Also, Tia Ghose believes, “Intelligent robots will overtake humans by 2100”. (2013) If so, many people are worried about this, what are we doing the stop it? Elon Musk said that once it arrives there is no controlling it. (2018)

However, Atul Rai states, “It’s the human which makes the phenomena positive, negative, friend or foe; when Newton discovered third law of motion it was not meant for developing weapons. Same goes for AI - people can use it for developing medical diagnosis equipment or killing machines; the only thing that matters is who is using it and for what.” (2017) Many people may argue that technology is not a threat, and others such as Elon Musk, Tia Ghose, and Bill Gates have a reason to be concerned. “There's quite a bit of acceleration in the development of AI systems,' says Bart Selman, a Cornell professor and AI ethicist who was at an event with Musk. 'And that's making it more urgent to look at this issue.' (2018)

There are many things that we don’t know about artificial intelligence. It’s hard to know what to believe. But thanks to the pioneering work of computational scientists, neuroscientists, and AI theorists, a clearer picture is starting to emerge. We already have computers that match or exceed human capacities. NYU research psychologist Gary Marcus has said that “virtually everyone” who works in AI believes that machines will eventually overtake us: “The only real difference between enthusiasts and skeptics is a time frame.” Futurists like Ray Kurzweil think it could happen within a couple of decades, while others say it could take centuries (2018). Many people think that it may not ever happen.

Unfortunately, AI is programed to do something devastating. “Autonomous weapons are artificial intelligence systems that are programmed to kill. In the hands of the wrong person, these weapons could easily cause mass casualties. Moreover, an AI arms race could inadvertently lead to an AI war that also results in mass casualties.” Says Max Tegmark, the president of the Future of Life Institute. Even though AI is also programmed to do good, it still develops a method of destructiveness to achieve its goal. AI is all around people every day. For example, an Amazon Echo/Amazon Alexa, they speak back as if they were a human. Many scientists have claimed that computers are and will be smarter than humans and these devices by amazon, are just one of many examples. The number one Example of AI are clearly smartphones, if you are using a smartphone, you are interacting with AI whether you know it or not (Beebom, 2018).

Peoples lives are impacted by artificial intelligence on a daily basis. Whether using smartphones, surfing the internet, buying products online, using navigation, wasting time on social media or listening to songs on the best music streaming service, AI is impacting everyday choices in one way or another. Humanities biggest threat/AI is developing to grow smarter than humans and is on top scientists’ minds. AI is not worrying people for no reason. Artificial intelligence needs to be used and handled cautiously.

Issac Asimov was one of the first people to ever think about what may happen in the future with AI. Elon Musk has the same ideas of Asimov and believe the same things. Asimov made three laws about robots in-order-for humans to be able to be ok.

The source above is about a movie called 2001: A Space Odessy. It is about a man and a computer that are in space together and it comes down to life or death. In the trailer, at the end, the computer Hal, doesn’t let the astronaut back into the space ship.

This article explains the good, and the bad about AI. It says that it is dangerous and should be handled with caution. Also, it says that artificial intelligence is made to do good but it develops a destructive way to achieve its goal.
