Humans are naturally social animals. We feel the need to care, connect, and compete with others. As technology gets better every year, we find new and easier ways to connect. Thus, social networking services are born. By the early 2000s Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter became available to people from all over the world. These companies became the giants of social networking services and a huge part of their income comes from advertisements. Due to the traffic that these services' get, they make the ideal platform for companies to advertise on.
For these advertisements to reach the right customers, this is where artificial intelligence comes in. AI make advertising easier, faster, and more customer friendly. AI can tailor ads to the individual and personalized the ads based on the location or previous interactions the person had online. This cultivates an ethical dilemma of privacy, should artificial intelligence be used to tailor ads to the individual? Is our privacy being invaded? Is our private information safe? I believe that AI should not be used to tailor ads to the individual.
To understand this dilemma, looking at key aspects of AI, privacy, and data is very important.
Key Idea 1:
What is Artificial Intelligence? According to computer scientist Professor John McCarthy in an interview he answered the basic questions people have about AI. 'Artificial intelligence is the science and engineering of making intelligent machines, especially intelligent computer programs.' Artificial intelligence can be divided into two broad categories: narrow AI and general AI (Heath, 2018). We use Narrow AI everyday such as Apple's virtual assistance Siri or, Amazon's Alexa.
These intelligent systems had been programmed to execute specific tasks and can only learn how to do those specific tasks hence the name narrow AI. On the other hand, general AI is more complex and capable of adapting to learn how to carry out more different tasks. This type of AI doesn't exist yet, but experts say general AI will be developed soon.
The intelligence from these two types of AI comes from a process known as deep learning. An NVIDIA Developer article says, “Deep learning AI can automatically learn representations from data such as images, video, or text without using hand-coded rules or human knowledge.” The AI used in social media sites today are exactly this type of deep learning AI technology. By analyzing human behavior on social media and online platforms, these AI can determine people's habits and how they spend their money based on huge amounts of data.
