Zaria Forman's Ted Talk: Drawings that Show the Beauty and Fragility of Earth

Zaria Forman's paintings of melting glaciers and icebergs floating in water explore moments of transition, turbulence and tranquility. She discusses the process of the artistic creations and the motivation behind her work. My drawings celebrate the beauty of what we all stand to lose, she says. Forman explains that she is an artist and through her work, she tries to show that climate change and global warming is real and its in effect right now.

To begin, the context of this Ted Talk, Forman considers it her life's mission to convey the urgency of climate change through her work.

Forman uses art to convey her message by going to faraway places suffering from climate change. Forman persuades the audience through emotion to hear her story and listen to the cause in which she is fighting for. By speaking about the melting glaciers in Greenland and the indigenous people losing their food sources and the Maldives being at risks of being washed away.

The main thing about this presentation is that this artist uses her skills to make sure that everyone is aware of this rising sea levels and the polar ice caps that are melting causing islands to submerge into the water which forces people to flee their homes. With the use of anecdotes and ethos, Forman gives numerous reasons for not only why she's taking action, but why the world should take action. For example, she states that sea levels are likely to rise between two and ten feet by century's end.

This Ted Talk would attract an audience of people who are artists and want to make a difference to stop climate change and global warming.

Forman enlightens her audience primarily through her use of facts regarding climate change and how it will affect us. For example, she states ice-free Arctic summers can happen as early as 2020. She uses both photographs and memory to show the world what we are doing to the world through art. My opinion on this topic is that global warming is a real thing and we all need to stop ignoring the fact of the sea rising to possibly 10ft in this century and take charge of our actions. My question for Zaria is what are some solutions for global warming and climate change?

Finally, the purpose of this Ted Talk is to urge a change or suffer the consequences if we do nothing. Formans purpose can be linked to Barlett and Steeles purpose because both relate to topics that are about the well being of humanity. Relying on genetics and biotechnology, Monsanto creates specialized seeds with built-in protections against insects, fungus and diseases. The catch with Monsanto is that farmers cant collect seeds from their own crops at the end of the season. The GMO seeds are frowned upon because we dont know the long-term health effects.
