Written concept of a personal performance

Categories: Personal

In my drama monologue, I am portraying the character of Mrs Iger from Jim Cartwright's play, Two. This play is set in a naturalistic style in the 1980s, taking place in a northern pub, where all the characters can be played by just two actors. Mrs Iger is depicted as resentful towards her husband, Mr Iger, due to his small, timid, and quiet nature, which hinders him from simple activities like buying drinks and engaging in arguments.

My interpretation of Mrs Iger is that she is a confident woman who outshines her husband in terms of confidence and assertiveness.

However, her monologue reveals her desire for "big men", indicating a longing for a masculine, dominant figure that Mr Iger does not embody.

This leads to her resentment towards him, as she envisions a man who is the complete opposite - big, quiet, strong, and brave.

The unattainability of her desire for a "big man" suggests that it is a forbidden fantasy for her, intensifying her longing.

Therefore, I plan to portray Mrs Iger as a confident character through her posture and demeanor.

I will have her sit up straight, legs crossed, and during moments of questioning, lean forward and make eye contact with a female audience member, as if sharing a secret.

Given the episodic nature of the play, I will adhere to the minimalist staging recommended by the playwright. The scene will feature only a chair and a small table, with Mrs Iger positioned downstage to create an intimate connection with the audience, as if confiding in them like a close friend.

Mrs Iger will remain seated throughout the monologue, as any movement would detract from the impact of her words.

I will begin the monologue slowly and confidently, showcasing Mrs Iger's deliberate contemplation of her thoughts and the vivid imagery she conjures in her mind.

As the monologue progresses, I will gradually increase the volume and intensity of my delivery, embodying Mrs Iger's descent into wild imagination. I will become less composed, moving more in my seat to convey being consumed by the fantasy.

As the monologue reaches its climax with the line "Yes, let me gather all ye big men of our isles and herd you up and lead you across America you myth men", I will escalate the intensity of my performance. I will speak louder and faster, culminating in a near-hysterical delivery of "you myth men", rocking slightly in my seat with ecstatic fervor.

For the final line, "Big men, love ya", I will exhale heavily after "big men", shaking my head slightly before delivering "love ya" with a sense of savoring the words. I will direct this line towards a man in the audience, as if speaking directly to him.
