Why Reading Books Makes You a Better Person?

Reading gives you the ability to expand your imagination and it can make you experience a roller coaster of emotions. Depending on what you are writing about, writing can be an outlet for some people to vent or express their thoughts on what they have been going through. Reading and writing is a skill that people will need in their everyday lifestyle. “ Reading maketh a full man and writing an exact man. And, therefore, if a man writes little, he need have a present wit; and if he read little, he need have much cunning to seem to know which he doth not.

” (Bacon) If you are reading then you are learning new things and if you are writing then that means you know things. The more you know the more you can write, and the more you read the more you learn.

Growing up, my sister and I would read several books together. We went from the Diary of the Wimpy Kid series to the Percy Jackson series, to Hunger Games, then to Divergent, and the list goes on.

My favorite types of books to read are romance, action, thriller, and suspense. I love reading because it brings you to a whole other world and sometimes makes you forget about reality. I think when a person says they hate reading it is only because they never truly tried it. They may have been forced to read a boring book for school but never read for fun. In this society, people think that reading is lame so they stay away from it to look cool.

“ If a person will begin with certainties, they shall end in doubts; but if they will be content to begin with doubts, they will end in certainties.” That quote by Francis Bacon relates to this topic because if you go in reading without an open mind, then you are not giving yourself a chance to try something new. You already made it up in your mind that you are not going to like it. Just because reading is not the “trend” right now does not mean people should just avoid it. Little do they know that reading can be the same thing as watching a movie because once you are in the zone of reading, those background noises disappear and you can picture every detail you are reading about in your head. The more complex the story is, the more interesting the book becomes and it can take you on an adventure.

Character development is another thing I enjoy reading in a book. It is very inspiring when you read about a character that had started at a low spot and having no one believes in them, to then overcoming that obstacle and seeing how strong and independent that person became. Unfortunately, in my junior year of high school, I did stop reading because I got distracted by other things. That was the year I switched from a charter school to a public school and I stopped making time to read. I do regret not reading as much because it has affected my writing and vocabulary skills, but my goal is to start reading again and get back to where I use to be. The quote,“ Read a thousand books and your words will flow like a river.” is a great example by Virginia Woolf explaining how impactful reading can be. If I had never stopped reading, who knows how good my writing skills or public speaking skills would be.

Writing has always been something I enjoyed because it is a way I can express my thoughts. When I was a child, my favorite thing after school was to write in my diary about how my day was. It was an outlet for me and every time I would finish writing about how my day went, I immediately felt better about the situation I was going through that day. I even enjoyed writing in High school when the teacher would give us a subject or book to write about. Writing long papers never really bothered me unless it was a topic that was not that interesting. In my opinion, I think the hardest thing about writing papers is coming up with the first sentence. It always takes me a couple of minutes to figure out how I am going to start the paper off.

Even though I enjoy writing, I know that I still need to work on my writing skills based on the grades I would get in my AP English class my junior year. Taking that class helped me realize that I had a lot of work to do. I can relate to the quote by W. Somerset Maugham which says, “ To write simply is as difficult as to be good” because it can sometimes be hard to write in simple terms for everyone to understand. What is simple to me may not be what is simple to others so it can be hard to get your point across for others to comprehend. I hope that taking this english class will help me improve my writing and being a political science major, it is a skill that I need to master. Reading and writing is beneficial for several people and the only way to get better at both is to practice.
