What Causes Students to Fail

What Causes Students to Fail a Course?
Students failing courses has become much more common now. The advanced world that we live in now is full of many distractions such as Internet, social networking, social life, and etc. Many students are more interested in what is more popular in society rather than their education that will help them towards a successful future. With these distractions being everywhere it causes many students to fail courses. Failing is the lack of performance of something due, required, or expected. Students tend to fail courses because they are distracted through social networking sites, through the use of electronic devices, and through working part-time.

To start off, many students are too addicted to social networking sites. Many sites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumbler and etc., have caught the eye of many young individuals. They are more interested in what is happening in other people’s life, and posting pictures of themselves rather than school. Distractions like this are causing a decrease in their marks. For instance, a professor at York University found that 10-20 percent of students are using their laptops for class notes, where has others were on social networking websites. Has you can see a high percentage of students are distracted by these websites instead of paying attention to what the teacher is saying. Which results in, missing out key information for that lecture and causing a higher chance of failing. Social networking is commonly used now more because of the devices that many students bring along with them.

In addition, the use of electronics in class is more common now, things like laptops phones, iPods, and iPad. Which causes many students to be distracted during a lecture because many students are not focusing ahead which can lead them to fail the course. The use of electronics is just an everyday thing now things like a simple text could distract a student away from what the teacher is teaching. Missing out on key information, and not knowing them for tests and exams. Also, many students enjoy listening to music in class, which blocks them out from the lesson. For example, according to the Wireless Association, 70 percent of students use their cellphones during class and free time. Results like these, show that electronics are popular to use, and many students have access to them which blocks them from what the teacher is trying to get through to them.

Furthermore, many students have part-time jobs, which causes them to work during weekdays and weekends. Which results into not having enough time for homework and studying for test. Also, balancing work and school is tiring which could lead to students missing out on school and falling asleep in class. According to an article by Queen’s University, students who work more than 20 hours a week (part-time) are linked to having poor school performance. This is because many students are too tired to do their homework and study because of work they had before. Which causes them to be unprepared for class each time, or simply they fall asleep because they do not get enough sleep.

Being unable to do the work or pay attention and participate will cost you marks in class, and be unsuccessful in the course. In order for students to be successful in their courses, they need to learn how to take initiative and put school has their first priority, In conclusion, students need to strive towards learning their boundaries of social networking, electronic use, and working while being in school. Having more friends on social networking sites, latest electronics, or being rich isn’t going to help them get good marks, there motivation will.
