Psychological stress among students has been getting a lot of attention recently, according to an article in Psychology Today by Dr. Alan Reifman, the lecturer of Texas tech University, which shows that there are some reasons why students have stress and the effects of the problem. The primary causes are some students cannot deal with time management and financial hardship and these lead to psychological and physical problems. Firstly, students may not be able to balance timing in daily life. Many students have to handle excessive workload, examinations and academic obstacles, students must stay up late at night and lack of leisure time.
Students cannot concentrate with the lessons when they feel tired, and fatigue is often affects stressors in study. Consequently, students feel overwhelmed and turn into a stressful situation. Secondly, students who come from low socio-economic background will face with financial hardship that can involve struggle to find money to pay for tuition fees and costs of living.
The debt associated with students loans can lead to high amounts of stress.
Due to the economic crisis, many students decide to drop out of school or college and become depressive. In addition to time management problem and financial stress can lead to a variety of physical and emotional illness. One of the significant adverse consequences is a physical problems, symptoms of stress are trouble sleeping, muscle tension, restlessness, headaches, blood pressure rises, shortness of breath and heart palpitations. Stress that continues without relief can affect negative stress reaction called distress.
Stress also worsens certain symptoms or diseases. Other effects are psychological disorders.
Stress causes the release of chemicals called noradrenaline and cortisol that impair the functions of the brain leading to depression, anxiety disorders, irritability or anger. Furthermore, some students turn to drugs and alcohol to relieve their stress but these substances tend to keep the body in stressed state and cause more health problems. In conclusion, the impacts of student's stress are caused from poor time management and financial stress that lead to body and mind problems. It is important for students to understand causes and effects of stress and how to handle with it. The essential ways to overcome the problems are students should be balance their life between study and relaxation to reduce stress while government should provide scholarships or student funds for basic education.
