Americanism is defined in the dictionaries as “a custom, trait, or thing peculiar to the United States of America or its citizens. ” It is also sometimes a word used to define an “allegiance to the United States, its customs, and traditions. ” In my opinion, these aforementioned definitions can and should be considered to be, in a sense, a puritan definition of the term Americanism. Why? Well, in my opinion, Americanism is not something that can be easily defined as something traditional and strictly a white man’s term.
America is a boiling pot of cultures and beliefs of all the immigrants of the world who have come to settle in this land.
This kaleidoscope of cultures, traditions, and beliefs is what defines modern day America. The complete picture offered by this merging of opposing beliefs and actions is what creates the modern definition of Americanism for me. Americanism is the belief that our nation treats all its citizens and visitors with a just an equal hand.
Americanism means that we recognize the right of every citizen of the world to just and proper treatment in accordance with international human rights and laws.
We offer each and every person who comes to America with an idealistic belief, a chance to take that belief and use it to create an even better America for its citizens and the world to admire. True Americanism lies in the belief that our country continues to evolve and deal with the changing world by adjusting our traditions and political beliefs to suit the needs of the modern day Americans -- modern day world.
Americanism is not an ideology.
It is not a tradition, it is something that lives in the heart of every citizen of this land. It is that driving force that moves us to become world leaders and peace keepers. It is that sense of duty and responsibility to keep order in the world that for now only knows chaos, doubt, and war. Americanism means a strong desire to see all the cultures, traditions, and beliefs of the various citizens of the country merging as one and creating a nation that understands and cooperates, not merely tolerates, his fellow human being.
