Whether it is happiness, love, the ability to bring others back from the grave, or technology. When we want things badly, we forget about our surroundings. We want it so bad that we forget what else is happening and we only focus on that one thing. If we realize that we cannot achieve it, then realization sets in and the true reality of the world comes back to us. This is exemplified in A Man Called Ove when Ove longs for his wife to come back to him and he thinks about suicide, and in Of Mice and Men when George and Lennie wish to move to their own place where they can have all the land they want and live peacefully.
Wanting impossibility can blind people from the truth by distracting them from their reality because they are obsessed with a non-existent dream. Through the thoughts and actions of Ove from A Man Called Ove, Wanting impossibility can blind people from reality because it can’t change your past no matter how hard you try.
For example in A Man Called Ove, throughout the first chapters Ove is frequently talking to his dead wife.
Ove is a lonely man living by himself, and only 6 months ago his wife passed away and this has made him very depressed. Without the support he needs at the beginning of the book, he prepares to kill himself to be with her. “ [He] climbs up on the stool, and puts his head in the noose.
Kicks the stool away. Closes his eyes and feels the noose closing around his throat like the jaws of a large wild animal”. This shows that Ove is trying to do the impossible, but his want for death is blinding him from the truth. It is blinding him from his reality because he has literally discontinued his way of life to achieve a dream that is not possible because he can’t be with his wife anymore and he feels that he has no hope of living without her. His wife signifies what is blinding him from reality, and the impossibility for Ove is being able to live with her, and this is significant because he cannot change the past, but if he changes his future for the better then he won’t be blinded from reality and the loss of his wife.
Through the speech of George and Lennie from Of Mice and Men, Wanting impossibility can blind people from reality because it can’t change your past no matter how hard you try. For example in Of Mice and Men, throughout the book, they talk about how they are going to get enough money to leave the ranch and live in their own place. They choose to work on a ranch to earn more money and claim that when they get enough money then they are going to move out for good. This is exemplified when George and Lennie are talking about the place on the ranch. “‘Well, it’s ten acres,’ said George. ‘Got a little win’mill. Got a little shack on it, an’ a chicken run,’ etc. “...An’ rabbits,’ Lennie said eagerly. ‘An’ I take care of ‘em. Tell how I’d do that, George.’ This shows that Lennie and George are unknowing of the truth, and they choose to follow this dream because of how great it seems to them. Their want for this new future is blocked out by their current work productivity, and also their past events, as Lennie has messed up things once before.
These two things are preventing them from achieving their goal because it proves that the impossibility of their future decisions cannot be obtained with their irrational actions. Wanting impossibility can blind a person from the truth by distracting them from important events that they need to see. More often than not, people enjoy the gifts of life, but that is not enough for them. They crave for more, and they dream about what they cannot achieve. This blinds a person from seeing what is right, as shown by Ove from A Man Called Ove, and George and Lennie from Of Mice and Men. Clearly, obsessing to achieving your dream is not worth it, and it makes it harder to see your current reality and the goals you can complete.
