The future of our planet is looking more and more like the film, WALL-E. The film “WALL-E” is a beautiful story that also has a dark undertone. It is a movie about a robot who finds love but also makes a brave attempt to save the planet from its hole of destruction that it is already so deep into. The motion picture film uses environmental waste & pollution, consumption, and big businesses to show the consequences that it has on people and Earth.
It also shows that if humans don’t start thinking about how to fix the harm that has already been done to our world, we will not have an environment that is safe for us to live in. This film has been very successful in inspiring people to want to change their behavior towards how they treat the environment.
The movie starts out in the beautiful solar system with all of its dark skies and purple galaxies. Then, slowly a neglected Earth is displayed.
But it’s not the planet that we’ve seen so many pictures of and are familiar with. Even so far away, it is obvious that this version of Earth has a polluted atmosphere surrounded by the debris clouds. The camera zooms in quickly and this planet is all waste and nothing else. There are mountains completely made out of trash and what looks like skyscrapers quickly turns into piles of garbage that are stories high. All there is left is a barren brown land devoid of any life except for a robot named WALL-E and his cockroach pal.
He passes by a holographic billboard that shows many WALL-E units waving and BNL starliners departing. The ad states, “We'll clean up the mess while you're away”, which clearly didn’t happen because there is still tons of trash that one robot is cleaning up. It’s possible that when “Operation Clean-Up” failed, they turned off all the WALL-E units and happened to miss one robot.
The next day, WALL-E goes to his work site and discovers numerous items before finding an item that will play a key role in this movie. He is completely captivated by this object, and had never seen anything like it before, so he takes it along with him. However, he doesn’t get far before another way more advanced robot named EVE comes out of the sky, she seems to be devoted to her directive. WALL-E is transfixed with her and she soon discovers something that he has, which she takes and shuts down automatically. She is taken by a ship that WALL-E somehow manages to hang on to, and it delivers them to the Axiom Ship. It is here, EVE and WALL-E meet their soon-to-be friends, the passengers and Captain B. McCrea but also meet their enemies, some of the robot that don’t want any change, like AUTO. EVE and AUTO must learn about the hidden secrets of the Axiom and stop robots, like AUTO,and fight to stop it before it’s too late.
The Buy N Large CEO states in the secret files, “Darn it all, we’re going to have to cancel Operation Recolonize. So just, uh… just stay the course. Rather than try to fix this problem, it’ll just be easier if everyone remains in space.” This quote shows that the rising toxicity levels on Earth made life unsustainable, so the CEO says to forget about Earth and stay on the paradise ship forever. In real life, if we continue to ignore and avoid the problems of our environment, then it’ll just pile up until we can’t do anything about it.
Another example would be consumption and big businesses. When Wall-E is riding around the dull and severely polluted Earth, he passes by a holographic ad that displays people on the Axiom as being skinny and fit. However, when he arrives on this ship it’s exactly the opposite. Every person on the Axiom besides the captain is restricted to self-driving chairs and are pretty large. In a sense, they are like infants. They have to be fed all the time by the only company left, which is Buy N Large. On top of that they are being fed way too often. Their bone density has decreased extremely because they don’t exercise and they eat so much. On a worldwide scale, 2.1 billion people or 30% of the population is obese. According to fast food statistics, Americans alone spend $50 billion on fast food annually. This is becoming a global issue caused by consumerism and big businesses.
All of the previous evidence helps to establish the fact that waste, pollution, big businesses, and consumerism are causing huge problems for the population and our environment. WALL-E serves as a warning to the audience to treat our planet and ourselves with respect and not as something to take for granted. I would strongly advise all readers to watch this film as it may change how your actions or how you view our world.
