Through the eyes of a 5 years old me, I've seen that magical device that my older cousin carried around her when she comes over to my house which always intrigued me with a distinctive ding sound each time before she takes out a black rectangular object out of her pocket. Every time she interacts with that object, I could see a brush of joy paints across her face. At that time, I have no idea what could be in that device and the strange ding that lightens a person's mood almost instantly.
As I transformed into a teenager, it became my turn to be in awe of the power of social media.
While it may vary depending on one's geographic location, I feel the urge to say that social media is an inevitable encounterance for almost all youth and adolescents. Young generations are surrounded with the vast coverage of social media that encourages growth along their journey through adolescence by developing a sense of identity and personal growth, triggering proactive learning through a new form of education, and granting convenient access to communication.
Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and Youtube have always been the four crowns of social media. At least for my generation, these platforms are the leading fours that are the most successful and impactful tools in our daily basis. These social technologies creates an environment for self exploration. As more and more people turn to social media to present themselves and share a variety of different ideas, an increasing number of influencers and role models start to rise.
It becomes easier for young voices to find aspirations and belongings through shared information. When I first entered the realm of social media, I felt like I was stepping out of my shell to express myself in the way I want. The freedom that social media gives is a practice for teens to decide the appropriate content to share as well as to learn to control how they want to be portrayed. On the other hand, social media allows me to seek support from other people when I am troubled or have questions that I feel hesitant to ask people in person. As many people are familiar with the ability that Reddit and Quora can spread their wings of network to accommodate a variety of individuals around the globe, but I am also fascinated by findings of inspiring personal stories that people share with each other that gave me strength and encouragement in life. Furthermore, social media allows a person to develop a more advanced sense of empathy by giving them opportunities to socialize and express themselves through online spaces. One could practice understanding of how others behave when they are interacting on social media and it could be tremendously beneficial to them in the near future of a technology based society as skills of communications is often required through emails and other platforms. Needless to say, social media have assisted me in establishing a clear image of my own being through inspiring figures, peer support and maturing my social skills.
Followed by the advancement of technology, a number of different learning methods are created and one of which is through social media. Social media encourages initiative learning outside of school. With the vast crowd and increasing participator in networking sites, an abundance of skills and knowledge are being shared. Social media grants the freedom for students to access learning materials outside the school with a touch of a finger tip. This amazing networking tool build interests for learning new skills outside of school curriculums. Unlike the dullness of school materials, a more visual and humor based method of transferring information creates sparks of creativity and promote self motivated learning. Youtube is what I consider the best social media platform that activates curiosity and proactivity towards an interested subject. I could always find myself drawn to these helpful and engaging videos of tutorials from specialized professionals. Aside from the history of Mesopotamia civilizations I learned through youtube, I also recall that summer of grade 8 when I saw a post on the blog site Mashable that it inspired me to make a DIY wind chime. Like Youtube, the advantage of the blog website, mashable is that it virtually has no limit over how much information you can take from it. From watercolor painting methods to coding, there are endless messages that each passionate individuals have made to share with a community of like minded people and to attract interested people from another community. Not only that it encourages teenagers to learn on their own, social media is also a part of one of the biggest sources to provide opportunities for learning a language and cultural diversity. Tweets and instagram posts exposes different lifestyles and spoken customs which leads learners to a whole new world into a foreigne culture. A very unique and precious experience is what I would call it.
It is understandable that some may portray social media negatively on cyberbullying, however, as bullying awareness are spread nationally, the numbers of cyber attacks involve with social media have significantly decreased. Moreover, schools that banned cell phones had a higher number of cases of cyberbullying, according to the early 2019 study by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). Overall, there have been drastic improvement on the safety of social media ensured for young people today.
Drawing back to the cradle in which Instagram, Facebook and Twitter originated from, the main purpose of social media is known for communication. To my surprise, I found that many people neglect the emotional significance of connections built while enjoying the easy routes of reaching out to others. Take an example from a heartfelt video of Nasa's reaction of the landing of Mars rover Curiosity. On the split second the rover was announced touched down, a wave of triumph and excitement were instantly celebrated among all the staff. Loud, applauding cheers, high fives, and even secret handshakes were being made in the control room. The most incredible thing is that, even through the screen, I felt my heart was thumping out at the blood-boiling sensational moment. That is when I realize the true meaning of connection that social media gave; to share pure happiness. In addition, when there is a group of people with common interests, they could find an outlet in social media to engage in discussions and conversations which helps to further develop that specific interest in a person. The next crucial purpose that social media serves for communication is providing opportunities to collaborate with partners, classmates and team members. While I was working on my History project last year, I realized the importance of Messenger to me as our group members barely have classes together and our team works were all dependent on the app. Similarly, one of my most important usage on social media is to maintain relationships with my family and friends. Since my dad and my grandparents reside in China, the only way we keep in contact is through video calling on the app WeChat. I believe one of the greatest benefits of social media includes reuniting families and friends. While it certainly help fast communications in daily use, social media apps also solves the issue of communicating with people across the globe.
When people think of social media, the first to come to mind is the massive trading of network. To me, the different uses of social media have had a positive effect on the youth of today as it assists in searching for identity, cultivating habits of independent inquiry, and gives an enjoyable, convenient and instant communication between distances. With so many opportunities given by social media, one could gain multiple advantages and learn tremendously from different aspects of the platform. Of course, social media is always changing, but there is no doubt that I am grateful to be born in the right time of history to witness and experience all the special gifts that social media has brought throughout my life. From my heart, I hope someday in the future when a new revolutionary change of technology rolls upon, another youngster would look at their version of social media and be astonished at its unimaginable possibilities.
