Thesis Statement: Reality TV has an internal conflict about the positive impact, and while most people think that there are no positive things, there are some positive things gained from reality TV without feeling it, such as Jersey Shore, Teen Mom, The Biggest Loser, and American Idol.
I. Introduction (the history of reality TV).
II. The negative impact of the reality TV.
III. An example of reality TV (Jersey Shore).
IV. An example of reality TV (Teen Mom).
V. An example of reality TV (The Biggest Loser).
VI. An example of reality TV (American Idol).
VII. Conclusion
Since TV had been created people started to like it too much, and with the time people have been addicted to TV. Nowadays, mostly every single house has a TV, and most people cannot live without it, it has been coming like something essential in our lives, like food or cloths. TV is the same as everything had been created has positives and negatives, and we have the right of managing our time not letting the TV to control us.
When dealers have seen people really enjoying watching TV, they start think to make something that brings a lot of money. And this is what are they focusing about, they just want to make money not to choose the good things for people to watch. So, the reason behind reality TV is just money because people who make shows and moves make what people like not what people will benefit about. So, a lot of people like the drama, and how others fight with each other or seeing a person love somebody, then cheating on her.
As a result, reality TV has covered most what people like in a special way with some spices. "Reality TV as we know it began back in 1992 when MTV
first broadcast The Real World. It was an experimental show that took seven people from different backgrounds and placed them in a house to live together for several months and have their interactions filmed. Today, reality TV programming has exploded. You can hardly turn on the television - to any channel - and not find a reality show" (History para1). "A genre of television programming in which "real life" people are followed in a situation, game, etc.; also called reality TV, reality programming" (Reference). That was a definition of reality TV, in my opinion, reality TV is a kind of TV show that express people's lives to be seen for others. Pursuing this further, to have an interesting show that makes people watch it, you need a lot of drama in it to make Alghamdi 2
people see every episode of it and wait to death to know what will happen next. In most people opinions, reality TV has no benefits at all. But, I have recognize some benefits that most people do not know about, they might get the useful things without knowing that, like something self-evident we get or children get it by watching people who are older than them doing it. Reality TV has an internal conflict about the positive impact, and while most people think that there are no positive things, there are some positive things gained from reality TV without feeling it, such as Jersey Shore, Teen Mom, The Biggest Loser, and American Idol. First, we need to know the negative impacts to understand the positive impacts. Reality TV has a lot of bad influence that is easy to be shown for people and to figure them out by knowing or seeing reality shows. One bad thing might cause the problem more is teenagers who watch Teen Mom show because being famous is any teen's dream. So, when they see how TV cares about the teenagers who have babies and how they get very famous and popular by being in TV like the Teen Mom show, they might get pregnant on purpose just to be in TV, and this is a serious crazy problem that show might cause. Another thing of the badness about reality TV is how the casts hook up and sleep together in the Jersey Shore show. This show might change of people's believes or hurts the others religion. And that all because they why they treat girls which is it just for fun and have sex then say bye to her, or the girls to be slept with more than one guy in less than 24 hours. Moreover, most religions do not accept what they are doing at all because most religions respect the man and
the woman to be chaste. Alghamdi 3
Second, my first example of reality TV is a show that has been really popular since it has begun a lot of people start watching it. Jersey Shore is a reality show has begun in 2009 with the first season until the fifth season. Also, MTV has produced other reality shows other than the Jersey Shore. Jersey Shore is a show has been made every summer in New Jersey that has 8 housemates (4 girls and 4 boys) live together in the same house and all of them are Italian originally and were born in the U.S. and all boys and girls have a nice look the boys have big bodies and the girls are pretty, which made the show very famous. The thing behind Jersey Shore is the way that the housemates hook up together, fall in love together and fight with each other, that is all called drama but in the Jersey Shore method which make it special. Some people get the useful impacts of this show while watching without feeling it. For example, if there are two boys, both of them have girlfriends. The first boy is in love with his lover for two years and they fight with each other too much and he does not know to get those problems solved, and he started watching the Jersey Shore two weeks ago, and he started to realize that he has the same problems that the casts have in the show, and three of the six problems have been solved with distinction. So, he will do just the same he saw and make everything be great. The other boy just was hook up with his girl for two weeks; also he is a fan of Jersey Shore, by watching this show and see the drama that is going all around, he will get it mentally, so when he has any trouble with his girlfriend in the future that is similar to what he had seen, he will have the solves immediately in his mind. Moreover, the good thing about that show is showing the problems that go between the lovers and Alghamdi 4
the friends to avoid them and the more important is to show who those problems get solved. So, you will have experiences in social life by watching these shows and without wasting people's time and without hurting any feelings. Another example is also a show from MTV called Teen Mom, this show begun in 2009 and they have produced two seasons. In each season, 4 teen mothers are making the show, talking about their problems with their kids, husbands or boyfriends, parents, housing and expenses.
Those problems are very hard to handle if you are old enough, what about if they are just 15-18 years-old with no job sometimes and going to school. Nowadays, this phenomenon has came a serious problem in U.S. and some countries. That show has been popular and got a lot of teen fans, and in my view, this is a really good show for teens to be shown. Because, these teens pregnancy has been caused from two sides, the parents and the teens. The biggest problem if parents do not apprehend their teen kids of having sex with others when they are still not enough of being pregnancy or having a baby. "It helps kids understand it's hard. A public opinion poll found that 82 percent of teens who have watched 16 and Pregnant said the show “helps teens better understand the challenges of pregnancy and parenthood and how to avoid it.” Only 17 percent said it “glamorizes teen pregnancy”"(Janes para3). So, when teenagers are in love and they have seen the others teen who are in the show facing a lot of troubles with their lovers and making the money and who they are stressed of thinking and taking care of their babies, those are all will deter them of making any mistakes like the casts have done. Expressing others mistake is kind of awareness. Alghamdi 5
Furthermore, there is another show that has a lot of impressive from people and has been produced from more than one channel which is The Biggest Loser. That show has been produced more than one time. The Biggest Loser has an emotional effect for heavy people to show them how easy it is to lose weight. That works because the casts, they have brought the most difficult situations and helping them lose weight. When heavy people see the ease of doing that, they will be brief to face this problem by seeing others who has the same problem getting into it. The other side of the benefits about this show is: "There are some good things about the Biggest Loser show that smart trainers can learn from: 1. They train people in a group and show how valuable small or large group training can be (it’s not just one-on-one) 2. Whether you like the methodology or not — the contestants on the Biggest Loser get great results (100lbs in 6 weeks is the shows average result – which is better than most any trainer or gym out there).
Yes I know they get multiple hours of training per day, but rather than focus on the “why that won’t work for me” let’s focus on the “what actually happened” 3. The trainers on the Biggest Loser train people HARD – very hard — and overweight people are a demographic that the fitness industry has traditionally babied… In fact, one of the leading fitness certification organizations has a recommendation that overweight people begin with 20mins of walking at 40% of maximum heart rate (e.g. 72bpm for a 40 year old). That’s REAL advice from a reputable fitness certification! I think most sedentary people could get their heart rate over 40% of max just watching a sporting event or a scary movie? 4. The Biggest Loser contestants use high intensity circuit training, kettlebells, battling ropes, the prowler, the TRXsuspension training, sandbags and free weights. This educates the general public that it’s not about fixed axis machines, supplements, acai berry juice or, as I stated above – walking slowly…. 5. They use circuit training and resistance training on the Biggest Loser – not just low intensity cardio." (What's Good para5). Finally, the most common show around the world and has more than one script, which is American Idol. That show has been going for years and in more than one country. That show has been success because of the way that is going to help the youth, society, talent people, achieve people's dream, and future's stars. People who watch this show and they have talent, after seeing others have got to be stars because they tried to be shown to the audience they have gotten a lot of benefits. Now, American Idol has done 11 successful seasons and that's because of the admiration of the audience for this show. Moreover, anything goes to benefit the society will return by great results. "American Idol contestants have sold 42 million albums over the past 6+ years; two acts (Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood) have accounted for 19 million of those sales" (Mansfield para3). So, if they really believe in themselves, they will not wait anymore and no more hiding their talents.

To conclude, reality TV is the same is everything else has been created, having bad and good things, it is all about us and how we use it. We can get the benefits and be away of the bad effects. Knowing the bad affects and avoid them is a perfect thing to do, and understanding how to get benefits from things you do or watch is a very smart idea we all need to follow this method. Everything could be bad, or another way, you can make
anything look bad, but knowing the positive points can not be overlooked. And this is an important thing people need to understand and not to follow any saying that's harm things or shows by saying there is nothing benefits by watching it, understand the idea of the show then think about it and figure out how to get benefits from it, even if it was made to be harmful. Like there is nothing perfect %100, also there is nothing bad %100. The problem with some people that they are so smart to see the bad things, but little people who do the opposite, and I am sure after I showed my points everybody will think this positive way!
