"Don't let go" were Jack's last words. Rose Dewitt Bukater (Kate Winslet), now 100 years old, reminisces her experience to others. She tells them about the love story with another passenger by the name of Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio). It all starts with Rose stepping on to a departure ship with her soon to be husband Cal Hockley (Billy Zane) and mother Ruth (Frances Fisher). Titanic had some of the wealthiest people of that time about to board. Jack was not considered one of the "high class" people.
Rose ends up falling in love with Jack despite her having a fiance. This love story becomes tragic when the Titanic collides with an iceberg. The ship then sinks leaving many people without their loved ones including Rose. Jack was unable to hold on. Titanic is a very emotional movie because there are many people that can relate to the things that go on throughout it. The movie Titanic shows that people can rise above socioeconomic status and labels.
It also shows necessary hopelessness.
Jack was considered the poor, vagrant type. There was a ghost of a chance that he could actually converse with Titanic's elite. Some of the wealthiest people were on the Titanic. Jack was fearless, and valiant. One quote that really shows this is when Jack is having dinner with Rose. Jack says "Just the other night I was sleeping under a bridge and now here I am on the grandest ship in the world having champagne with you fine people. I figure life's a gift and I don't intend on wasting it.
You don't know what hand you're gonna get dealt next. You learn to take life as it comes at you and to make each day count" (Titanic). The message is that money is powerless unless being happy with yourself. Jack made each day count not because of his financial situation or lack of but because of his outlook on life.
Titanic is heartbreaking and sends a hopeless message but a necessary hopelessness message. It is disturbing but most of all eye-opening. Every person boarding Titanic thought they were boarding an "unsinkable ship". It goes to show that you can think you have every little detail of your life planned out but really none of us know what tomorrow brings. Nothing in life is certain and no ship is unsinkable. Nobody leaves this earth unhurt or undamaged. There will always be trials, error, misfortune, and death.
People can relate to the movie Titanic because the struggles that the characters face, us as real people face them to. How high of a education you have and how much money you have is one of the things Jack had to face and something us people face every day. People can relate to this movie by the hopelessness they felt while watching it. Even though hopelessness sounds like a bad thing, its not. At some point, it turns into hopefullness. There is hope that love can win even if its not how you expected.
