The phrase popular culture is defined differently depending on who is making the definition, as well as the context within which it is used. Generally, people recognize it as the vernacular or the culture that is predominant among the people in that society. Being the culture of the people, popular culture entails all the aspects pertaining the social life of these people. Among the aspects that represent this kind of culture includes style of dressing, slangs used, rituals for greetings, as well as menus.
In addition, mass media has a major impact on popular culture. Over time, factor that affect popular cultures change, leading to a change in this culture. Similarly, language changes with time, with different aspects of language that were initially used being shunned from new ones. Moreover, people living in different generations tend to have different popular cultures and languages (Spears, 2009).
Pop culture changes the world around us daily. Mostly we tend to notice what is “hot” or what is "in" right now, yet something we don't seem to take notice of is how our language trends have changed.
With the new age of technology comes a massive wave of change in how pop culture influences our lives. It's time to look at how the way we communicate has evolved to keep up. I. Technology and language Technology, especially the internet has had an immense impact on pop culture. Through technology, and the development of some languages to be used by many people across the globe, the world has developed into a global village.
This is such that people are able to interact through social media platforms like Facebook, YouTube and Twitter; telecommunication is enhanced; and many people are in a position to break the virtual barrier to interact with others in distances far from them.
The creative industry has been able to harness this energy to reality, especially through making different forms of culture popular (Danesi, 2012). Technology facilitates them by enhancing their engagement and interaction, something that enables them to offer their customers better service and to come up with innovative ideas. People in the mainstream media and other platforms that are facilitated by technology are able to inspire tastes, which are then passed on to other people as forms of culture. That is the main reason a certain trend that originates from the United States could be popular among a certain group of people in a different part of the world (Spears, 2009).
Short hand or abbreviations These are also referred to as acronym abbreviations, which are shortened words that are used to stand for another word. They are used in various popular cultures, more so in computer science, sports science, social media, and conservation among others. An individual would struggle to find the meaning of an abbreviation, unless they understand the popular culture in question. The abbreviations often have a direct meaning, although in rare instances they don't (Danesi, 2012). a) How it started with MSN MSN is a popular internet acronym that stands for Microsoft Service Network. Launched at least two decades ago, MSN is a web portal that engages in the collection of internet services as well as applications together for the use buy Microsoft internet users. Microsoft has been using MSN as a brand name for an array of its products and services, such as Hotmail that has since changed to Outlook, Messager that has been replaced with Skype, together with a search engine that is currently known as Bing, alongside a couple others. Microsoft has managed to use this strategy to market its products and services to its customers, something that has had immense success (Danesi, 2012).
Using those abbreviations through spoken word not just typing Abbreviations are not only used in typing, but also in speaking. A good number of people, especially when giving names of places or people prefer to use shorter versions of these nouns. For instance, there is many people prefer to call the United States of America U.S. There are other abbreviations of the word, which differ depending on the location (Spears, 2009). Slang A slang is a kind of language that consist of several words of sets of phrases that could be said to be informal, but are commonly used in the speeches or writing by people that associate with a certain popular culture. Typically, slang is a combination of vocabulary of words that are not standard in a certain language but are used on subversions of the users of the language. Often, slangs are interpreted by individuals that identify with the popular culture to mean something different to what they typically mean.
Where slang started Different cultures have various slangs, with their origins not being clear. Slang expressions share a similar origin with standard speech, although the former could have additional expressions like idioms, similes, and metaphors among other figures of speech. However, the words that are used in slang could have words that have acquired new meanings, have become generalized, or been further abbreviated to alter their original meaning (Coleman, 2012).
How it was introduced through pop culture Slang is a manner through which a language changes and is renewed. A slang used by a certain group of people is different from that used by another group. Generations also have different slangs. Now, among the most common words used as slang is cool, to mean that something is extremely good. However, this has not been the case among the pop culture. In the mid 20th century, they used swell to referee to something that is good. N the 1980s the words sweet and wicked were popular, dope or bad were used in the 1990s, while sick or whack were common in the 2000s. Slang have been embodied in pop culture over time, although those who associate with it could not be aware of this fact. However, the slangs used in one generation differ from those used in others (Kövecses, 2009).
Why it stuck As noted, slangs have been part of the pop, and other cultures over a long time. A slang mostly makes a suggestion that an individual who utilizes these words or phrases associates with the people in the group. This means that when an individual uses a slang that is used in pop culture, they are associating themselves with the same. Moreover, people in the group could use slangs to distinguish themselves from others. In the pop culture, people who want to associate with the culture would be keen to use the common slangs. Moreover, these people would also like to use these slangs when discussing matters of secrecy while among those that do not associate with the culture. These factors have been key in making sure that slangs stick in the pop culture, as people seek to associate with the culture and to avoid being understood by unwanted audience but only those intended (Coleman, 2012). Music and language Music and language are among the major aspects that make up the pop culture. People that associate with the pop culture have a genre of music that they associate with, one that incorporates different aspects of their culture (Danesi, 2012).
Is there a difference between the words we use in music and spoken word There is no major difference between the words that are spoken from those that are ut across in music. However, music allows for the use of more aspects of speech that speech. For instance, in music one is able to use symbolism to a greater extent than one that is speaking.
How music has changed how we communicate Music has had a major impact on the way people communicate, especially when communicating issues that affect people in the society. As noted, music allows for a deeper use of parts of speech that could have been used in speech. Some messages could hardly be sent through speech, considering that they could trigger some controversy among the audience. However, symbolism could be used to pass controversial messages that have much impact in the society. For instance, when targeting poor leadership, a musician could use symbolism to highlight the vices in the society (Spears, 2009).
The manner of our communication has dramatically changed over the past decade. Not only have we introduced new ways to communicate: online and texting, among others, but now we have changed the types of words we use and their meanings. People are also getting to associate with different cultures, something that increases the use of come slangs.
