The Great Gatsby does a good job at keeping our undivided attention because they involve people whose lives are as complicated as ours, or else they would be unlikely to hold our attention as we read on. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby'. This book does a good job at showing how complicated our lives and his can be. Gatsby goes through so much he just wants Daisy back in his life. The Great Gatsby shows complication throughout the story but these three major points explain it best, the love triangle with Daisy and Gatsby, the affairs with Tom and Myrtle, and how Gatsby's lies towards the Nick affects the story.
The love triangle between Daisy and Gatsby is complicated they both were in love once and then Gatsby had gone off to war for years and Daisy couldn't wait and found a new love. 'Oh, you want too much!' she cried to Gatsby. 'I love you now-- isn't that enough? I can't help what's past.
' She began to sob helplessly. 'I did love him once-- but I loved you too.' Daisy expresses her feelings in the quote. she loved Gatsby, but also Tom, and to her she loved them the same. Gatsby is shocked at this point and didn't want to believe she was telling the truth. You can see why Gatsby is so blown away when she confesses, to Gatsby Daisy is his one true love.
As you read more on in the story Tom and Myrtle have an affair and mostly it's Tom's needs being satisfied by Myrtle.
'Daisy! Daisy! Daisy!' shouted Mrs. Wilson. 'I'll say it whenever I want to! Daisy! Dai----' Making a short deft movement Tom Buchanan broke her nose with his open hand. (pg36) both characters are driven by their wants and needs they lose it, Myrtle yells at Gatsby and Gatsby breaks her nose. Myrtle yells because she gets frustrated that he's not honest with his marriage and he breaks her nose because she continued talking about daisy after he told her to stop. Myrtle pushed limits but gatsby pushed further
In this story Nick Carraway seems to have back and forth thoughts about Gatsby because of his lies but seeing how things played out in the story Nick ends up carrying Gatsby's lengancy. 'They're a rotten crowd,' I shouted across the lawn. 'You're worth the whole damn bunch put together.'(pg 154) after what happens in the chapter Nick is now seeing Gatsby more generously than he sees others. Nick has steadily calmed down and is going towards Gatsby’s side in the conflict between the Buchanans and Gatsby. Nick then suddenly feels the need to carry and protect gatsby's legacy!
In conclusion of the love triangle with Daisy and Gatsby, the affairs with Tom and Myrtle, and how Gatsby's lies towards the Nick affects the story, this story shows complication that real life people go through. Love can make us do unspeakable things sometimes and there's nothing we can do once it's done. Gatsby didn't grow up around wealth but felt the only way to get Daisy back was show her wealth. Our last image of Gatsby is of a man who believed in a world and a future that was better than the one he found himself in
