The Dream of the People in The "Great Gatsby"

Categories: The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby follows the emerging identity of a young man as he grows from a middle-class boy to a rich young man living a superficial lifestyle and finally into a man who realizes that money cannot buy love.

Gatsby’s ambition to become rich is the result of his obsession with his former girlfriend Daisy who is now married to a prosperous man. Hence Gatsby thinks the only way to win Daisy back is by becoming even richer than her husband to impress her and finally win her back.

In The Great Gatsby, money is a huge motivator in the characters’ relationships, motivations, and outcomes.

Daisy is characterized as the girl with a “voice full of money”. Gatsby realized how interested Daisy was in his wealth; all that he focused on, made Daisy believe that money was the door opener to their love. “He hadn’t once ceased looking at Daisy, and I think he revalued everything in his house according to the measure of response it drew from her well-loved eyes.

Daisy believed that after Gatsby was gone, the money was gone, too. While Gatsby felt true love for her, Daisy was only in love with his money and wealth. Therefore, the novel does not only describe the power of love but also illustrates the complex relationship between men and women and the impact of wealth on individuals and their feelings for each other.

Daisy and Tom come both from very rich families, and they live together in East Egg, the auther call them “old rich” class-

Daisy almost changed her mind about marrying Tom after she received a letter from Gatsby, but she went through the marriage with Tom.

In the first weeks of their marriage, Tom cheated on Daisy multiple times Tom even cheated on her soon after their marriage. This showed us that money in their relationship helped their romance but it couldn’t buy the love between Daisy and Tom.

The book's popularity certainly stems from the fact that it is not only about the obsession with becoming rich but also covers a wide range of other topics, like true love and moral integrity. The book is trying to tell you that life is not always about wealth, social status, and importance but also about true love and romance with other people.
