The Danger Of A Single Story: How Is It Possible

Have you or someone you know made any assumptions about a group of people you have seen on the news or the media? Well if you have, you’ve participated in having a single story. A single is when the same in-complete story gets told over & over again, without actually knowing the real truth about that group of people. The danger of a single story can create false stereotypes and are incomplete stories individuals hear which can leave a negative impact on our society.

Single Stories are dangerous because they can lead to false conclusions that are not based on facts but are based on stereotypes. Sometimes it’s hard to tell whether one is telling the truth or just an opinion. It’s also difficult to tell if one is telling the truth because of their own experiences or because of others’ experiences. These narratives often focus on racial, spiritual, or economical traits. Single Stories can cause us to make assumptions about people who don’t share our views on things which can lead to misunderstandings.

According to Chimamanda Adichie, “The dangers of having a limited narrative about other people & places can cause separation between one another.”. I think not knowing the full truth about people or places can blind us to the actual truth so we end up believing what is told by the newscast, social media, and other people. If we only see people as poor and uneducated, or if we insist something or someone is only good, superior, and can do no wrong, then our view is incomplete.

According to Chimamanda Adichie, “It flattens our experience”. When we see the same single stories about one person, group, or people, again and again, we happen to think and get into these single stories. Difficult personalities, experiences, and people are flattened and decreased with one multi-dimensional story. Single stories are dangerous because they can create a false sense of reality, which leads to an uninformed view of the world.

Decreasing an issue to a single story can be risky. Not all the specifics will be interpreted the same way when telling a story, and most people think it's simpler with a simple stereotypical argument. To avoid this we must first understand its context. If we don’t know the context of a story, then our understanding of it will be limited. In this way, we cannot see our world as a whole. According to David Brooks, “Reducing people to one story, ends up taking away their humanity.” I think when you reduce people to one story it takes away people feeling like they’re equal. Other people may have different perceptions of being lazy, criminal, or even less human. For instance, the criminal justice system was built on racism. According to David Brooks in his article “The Danger of a Single Story, “The criminal justice system enabled police brutality often as a racist sort.”. And because of this corrupt system more people of color are becoming incarcerated & more police brutality. As a result, people's perception of people of color is that they believe that they’re criminals & deserve to be in jail. And, it reduces social problems to a single which can lead to a negative impact on our society.

Single stories can cause people to be racist and not objective. They’ll listen to what they hear in the media. Which can not always be true. Single stories can lead to a lack of empathy for others, which leads to an un-informed view and a lack of objective truth. According to Chimamanda Adichie, “I realized that I had been so immersed in the media coverage of Mexicans that they had become one thing in my mind: the abject immigrant. I had bought into the single story of Mexicans, and I could not have been more ashamed of myself.” I think this relates to coverage in the media of such important issues, as it needs careful recognition of sources and effective attempts to see more than one story about any given group. I feel like there are so many things that the media is hiding, but they don’t want to tell us the truth about that individual or just a group of people. I think that’s why the media mostly incorporates things that are negative and can end up being false without properly being educated about that group of people, place, or person. According to Karen Neal, “Each individual is different in numerous ways from every other, but we still rely on generalizations to explain to them when we encounter others.” We are all hooked on believing one thing about an individual, a place, or a group of people. In this society, the media is the main source for us to know what is happening around us. It has become so important that we have started to believe in every story that has taken place in the media. Allowing different views is significant, even though they are not the most common.

To avoid participating in a single-story people need to be more open to other cultures, emphasize one another, and be more communicative. Stories are certainly important and powerful. They can open our eyes, or act as blindfolds. How, when, why, and by whom stories are told shapes our worldview. So, we should all do our research and educate ourselves before jumping to conclusions are an individual, culture, a group of people, place, etc.
