The Cultural and Religious Differences in the Role of Women in Traditional Islam

When it comes to combining woman's rights with the religion of Islam it is hard for the two to coexist as the founding principles of both differ on how women should be treated and viewed in society. The two can co-exist without overlooking a belief of the separate issues as the two would not have to be altered without changing one altogether. It is important to understand the traditional ideals of Islam, what the intentions and ethics used to be, not what society has constructed the words of the Qur'an to mean now.

Women's rights exist mainly on a broad belief of how women should be treated without regarding culture and the different regions of the globe.

Much traditional culture's still follow their original beliefs of women and how they should be presented within the public as well as the private sphere. When looking at the political systems of a country it is important to keep religion in mind as well; "Religion plays a pivotal role in informing the ways women are treated...

both legally and socially" (Shah, 2006). Politics are simply a reflection of the population in which the system resides; people expect their government to keep their interests in mind when it comes to governing which includes their religious practices as well.

The stance of women's rights existing in the Islamic world, steam further than just based off of religious ideas, and more so how the ideals are acted out upon in society. The rights of the women extend from the penal codes and the understanding of Islamic ideas and teaching.

The way Islam is taught might have to be reformed for certain ideas from the Koran have been altered to fit a patriarchal society.

Many Muslim women are often viewed to be oppressed from a Western perception based on their religion and the boundaries it creates for them. What women in the Western world view as oppressive is not always the case in other nations; different cultures create a different viewpoint for the inhabitants as there are no set roles for gender across the globe. Yes, some women are oppressed within the Islamic states, but the notion of all women being treated as inferior are based off of misconceptions and stereotypes created from the West. Women of Islam exist in various roles throughout the community and do not face discrimination based off of their religion. This is not to say they are not discriminated against within society but these are socially constructed restraints based off of a different interpretation of the Koran.

The "role of women" in Islam is not easily defined within a cultural context although there is recognition of functions and different roles of gender within the book itself.

However, within the Qur'an there is supporting evidence of a mutual support within the roles and encouraging a balance between social and family life. "Many Muslim women explain that “true” Islam is frequently compromised by oppressive practices that have their roots in cultural differences or political expediency; general ignorance and lack of engagement with the diversity inherited within the tradition contribute to the perpetuation of these practices" (The Pluralism Project). The tensions between Islamic practices and the women involved can be eradicated by understanding the differences between cultures. By understanding the cultural and religious differences will give a better light to the religion of Islam and help to elucidate on the true practices instead of the socially constructed boundaries put into place by society.
