The Capacity Of Humans' Hearts In Joyas Voladoras Essay

Categories: Plot

The theme of Brian Doyle’s essay Joyas Voladoras is to lead a life with your heart, cherishing life's every moment, because the time that we have on this earth is limited. Throughout the essay, Brian Doyle describes the life of a hummingbird, a blue whale, and a tortoise. Even though these animals vary in size, shape, and life expectancy, these animals all share a common organ: the heart. The heart is a vital organ that we can not live without.

It does more than just pump blood. It is the determining factor of who a person is. The heart is not just a physical body part, but also where we hold our deepest values and morals. In a time of happiness and even pain, we should treasure our every moment because every heartbeat counts. Brian Doyle expands on the true definition of the heart, which he reveals to be a place where we let out emotions run wild. Doyle considers the capacity of the heart, while meanwhile exploring the everyday emotions that we feel like love, fear, and disappointment.

Brian Doyle develops the main idea that despite our setbacks, we should continue to cherish life.

In the first paragraph, Doyle writes about the heart of the hummingbird. Brian Doyle recalls that the hummingbird can fly backward and fly 500 miles without rest. They live eventful lives, but they come close to death at an early age. When the hummingbird rests, their heart is more prone to slow down. Their hearts are small and fragile, yet they lead their life with their hearts.

The hummingbird only lives until about two years old however, they live precious, eventful lives. Doyle then compares the hummingbird to a tortoise whose life expectancy nears 200 years old. Brian Doyle writes, “Every creature on earth has approximately two billion heartbeats to spend in a lifetime. You can spend them slowly, like a tortoise and live to be two hundred years old or you can spend them fast, like a hummingbird, and live to be two years old”. Brian Doyle is saying that there are many different pathways that people take in life. We all live differently, but ultimately, we should realize that life is full of disappointment, betrayal, and heartbreak, yet life is still precious. We can choose to live a slow and cautious life, like a tortoise or a fast-paced and fun life like a hummingbird. Doyle emphasized that we all live our lives differently, yet despite who we are, every single person shares the same, common organ: the heart.

In the closing paragraph, Doyle writes about the troubles that humans undergo every day. Our hearts break then slowly heal. Brian Doyle considers the capacity of humans' hearts.
