The American Dream

Categories: American Dream

The American Dream can be something different to every citizen in the United States. It’s defined as the ideas of freedom, equality, and liberty held available to every American. This means that every American has the opportunity to achieve their dreams of having a successful and meaningful life. This started when immigrants first came to America and is still around today. The American Dream is just as valid as it was when America was founded, but depending on whom you are and what you do for a living, it may be more achievable to some than others.

When America was first founded, immigrants from all over the world were coming to the country to see what it holds from them. People thought of it as the country of hopes and dreams, with many opportunities present. They all wanted to have a successful job, with a lot of support for their families, along with freedom and equality. Now the common dream might be to have a job with a reasonable amount of income, a big house with nice cars, and have a family that they can support every day, while being happy with life.

This country still has its freedom and equality for all people, and chances today for jobs of all kinds. People will always have dreams of being successful and it has been that way for hundreds of years. It may not be heard of as much today to have a dream of being independent or equal with others, but is still thought about, especially for people who are discriminated against, whether it’s race, religion, politics, or sexual preference.

Even though it may mean something different to everyone, I believe that it’s still valid today in the United States because people will always have that one dream that want to fulfill in their lives.

Although the American Dream is still valid today, it may not be achievable for all Americans. Everyone has different jobs which can control how successful they are, or want to be. Depending on social class or income, one’s dream may be more achievable to some than others. For example, in the short story we read called America and I, a Russian immigrant who came to America had these huge expectations of the country and dreams for herself, but since she was so poor and working a factory, she had a hard time fulfilling her goals. I believe that most dreams revolve around one’s happiness and well being, and this is achievable for all.

If someone’s dreams are about money and having a successful job, then this is not achievable for all. You probably have to be wealthy to be able to be given all your “wants”, and not everyone can be a surgeon or a lawyer. Getting a job is harder for some because of the way America looks like society today, or simply because of the economy, so that could hold someone back from succeeding in their dreams. Having freedom or equality will always be a part of the American Dream and will always be achievable for anyone in America. American qualities like freedom, liberty and happiness are achievable for any American, but getting all your wants and needs may be more difficult to achieve because of jobs, income, and/or social class.

Even though the American Dream is defined differently to everyone, the common definition is the ideas of freedom, equality, and liberty held available to every American. This still holds true today from many years ago. The American Dream is just as valid as it was when America was founded, but depending on whom you are and what you do for a living, it may be more achievable to some than others. People usually have the dream of being successful and happy today, and hopefully is still present in the future.
