Gone are traditional, restrictive clothes, a new age of fashion is taking New York by storm; the fashion of freedom. Women with short hair, short skirts and an even bigger freedom of expression, it is the new age of the roaring twenties. Most women, not just Flappers, have freed themselves from the shackles of the Victorian era by ridding their wardrobes clothes, such as long dresses and tight corsets. Bobs are in and those long locks are out - scandalous to some, but to most women, this new non-feminine hairstyle is one welcomed with opened arms.
These modern, short hairstyles symbolize the independent and modern women of this new era.
Fashion can change people, it can make them feel more powerful, more independent and free from their everyday life, Myrtle Wilson is a prime example of the changes fashion can do to one's personality. “Mrs Wilson had changed her costume sometime before and was now attired in an elaborate afternoon dress of cream-coloured chiffon, which gave out a continual rustle as she swept about the room.
With the influence of the dress, her personality had also undergone a change.”(pg. 30) There is a change in the way she perceives herself and her outlook on her life at that time shows only a snippet of the power that fashion holds. Fashion is an expression, and today it is an expression of our new found freedom as women.
While women’s fashion is busy breaking new ground, men’s fashion has stayed relatively unchanged.
The normal suits with hats when going into town and flannel at home, have stayed consistent over the years and don’t seem to be changing anytime soon. A man’s way to impress still doesn’t stray far away from the old hat and cane look; a look many feels adds a feel of sophistication and smarts to just any old suit.
The one welcomed change in the wardrobe department of those men in our lives is tailored suits; suits sized perfectly make even the men who work the gas station smarter. If only George Wilson would listen to this, maybe a smarter look would keep Myrtle for straying away from their ever so “faithful” relationship. One man, George could learn a thing or two from is Mr Gatsby. Gatsby knows how to dress, with suits that always fit to perfection and shirts of every colour, he is a man that dresses to impress (pg. 92)“He (Gatsby) took out a pile of shirts and began throwing them, one by one, before us, shirts of sheer linen and thick silk and fine flannel, which lost their folds as they fell and covered the table in many-coloured disarray.” Shirts of all colours, materials and styles, no wonder Gatsby is the talk of the town! His fashion is almost impeccable, well that is to most people excluding Mr Tom Buchanan. 'He wears a pink suit.' (pg. 122)Not a big fan of Mr Gatsby Tom? Wonder why?
