A. A Background of the Study
Students usually become aware of study skills when their learning habits are limiting their potential, don’t suit their personalities, or the causing significant levels of anxiety before exams. Skills or study strategies are approaches that are applied to learning. As human beings we are constantly in one learning process after the other. And it is therefore important that we understand that what might work for us doesn’t necessarily have to work for other. However, it is still important that students should be consistent along with their studies.
According to the theories of study habits, there are broadly two types of students; the first category is of the students who study for a shorter duration, have good concentration and are able to get good grades without much effort. The second category includes the students who have poor concentration. These people need to work hard to get good grades. With a regular study habit you will find that the child will study at time that it is deemed normal to study.
The quality of a nation depends upon the quality of its citizens. The quality of citizens depends on the quality of their education and quality of education besides other factors depends upon study habits and study attitude of the learners, pupil, or student. Quality of education is reflected through academic achievement which is a function of study habits and study attitudes of the students. Thus to enhance the quality of education, it is necessary to improve the study habits and study attitudes of the students.
To improve study habits and study attitudes of the students, those factors is needed to be identified which affect these characteristics adversely. Identification of these factors may lead towards remedial measures. To identify factors having negative effect on study habits and study attitudes, to propose remedial measures and to employ strategies for the development of good study habits and study attitudes, as well as organized guidance services are needed in schools.
B. Statement of the Problem
1) Since study habits are pertaining to the methods that aid learning, how can these affect the students?
2) What are the common factors that affect study habits among these students?
3) In which most of the students today are tempted in many gadgets that can make their homework, for example (=watching TV), and because of this, it may result to a poor study habit.
4) Are they learning a lot? By doing so, what will be their strategies, their way of learning? How can they improve these skills?
C. Significance of the study
For the students
The proposed research will determine the differences and the common factors that may affect the study habits among the grade 7 students. This will make the school community be aware of the common study habits among the students especially the 4th year students who will soon graduate from high school.
This kind of research may let the students know their problems and difficulties in terms of studying. By this, they will be aware about the study skills and how to improve in learning new knowledgeable things. We can also expect that through this study, the different sections in the grade 7 level that we surveyed will develop some new strategies or solutions in regard to this matter.
For the School and parents
If we come up with the majority of the students who have poor study habits, then the school can also help the students to avoid this act, of course with the cooperation of the parents.
Lastly, this will also examine the students in their main motivators, as well as their materials used for study. It will help the main critical reflection in Skills outcome such as selecting, analysing, critiquing, and synthesizing. The main purpose of this research is to enable the child to learn, whereas the teacher’s task is to facilitate the learning process and develop study habits and the right attitudes toward learning.
D. Scope and Limitations
The scope of this research is the grade 7 pupils in the high school department of University of Perpetual Help System Dalta, Las Piñas City campus. This will determine the factors that may affect the study habits among the young people. It gives concern to how they give efforts to their studies and on how they prioritize their education.
