In ``Into the Beautiful North´´, Luis Alberto Urrea tried to make an spiritual trip while writing the book, he wanted to put together multiple topics and social elements and talk about them, talking in every part of the book about humanity, introducing surprise and social problems, such as racism is. From the beginning, he makes the readers feel the story as the protagonist would, he achieves that empathy from the reader introducing each character in depth, telling us, the readers, about their story, their feelings and their goals.
When the characters are planning their trip to the North, we know what inspires them and we have an idea of what their role will be in the story.
At first, the author, Luis Alberto Urrea, tells us the main problem that the protagonists are going through, allowing us to think what they think and to feel what they feel. When they decide to go to the North, they all know what they want, as individuals.
But they also share a common purpose, to bring men to Tres Camarones to help the other citizens to kick the bandidos out of the town. Even knowing that is going to be a harsh trip, they start the journey, with the hope of finding what they want. At that moment, Luis Alberto Urrea shows us the reality of thousands of people that risk their life to look for a better place to start a new life. They would even risk their families and children life because of what they think America is.
In the book, the characters find something really different from what they were expecting, and that is what happens in reality with many immigrants that come to America.
The moment when the main characters meet Agent Arnold Davis, is, in my opinion, a key moment for the story. Agent Arnold Davis is an example of humanity personificated, he treats Nayeli and her friends as other people, even knowing that they are illegal immigrants, he does not deshumanitize them, and he treats them with the rights that they deserve just for being humans. He disapproves of the other border agents, because they want to find terrorists and bombs, and they are not there to just protect their country, they want heroism instead.
In the story, there are also other people that show us another topics, for example, when Nayeli and Tacho are kicked out of a Mexican restaurant by Mexican people, because they were illegal immigrants and made look bad to the legal immigrants, it shows us the individualist thoughts about some of the characters, that did not want to help them because the did not get any benefit. Other moment, is when the librarian helps Nayeli to find her father, even if she did not get anything for it, just to make Nayeli’s mission easier. In conclusion, the author shows us a reality in this book, and different perspectives and points of view about the people that take place in the story, making us think about the different themes that appear in it.
