Establishing Ground Rules for Learner Behaviour and Respect

Explain the ways in which you would establish ground rules with your learners, which underpin appropriate behaviour and respect for others. Ground rules are a group of mutually agreed rules that are developed between the trainer and students to give benefit to both, the students know what to expect from me and I know what behaviour to expect from the students. The rules can be developed by using mind mapping, creating lists and discussions, this way all feel that they have contributed and more likely to adhere to.

Petty (2009, p. 123) “Class rules should be based on educational, moral and safety criteria only”.

Maslow’s “A Theory of Human Motivation” is the first time that we see “Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs”. Essentially every one of us is motivated by our individual needs, some of which can also be applied to a group. John Morley & Martin Wordsworth (2010, p. 53) take this a step further and applied it to the class room and produced the “Highfield Hierarchy of Learning Needs”, several parts of which can form part of the ground rules.

The way I develop Ground Rules is a group discussion. I need to have a clear idea of the minimum rules that I want before going into a class, this way I can adapt my rules based to the contributions from the students.

I can also guide the students if needed. We would also cover what will happen when a student or I break the rules. This way when the occasion arises, the students already know what to expect and I will have the backing of the entire class.
