“Turning gloom into boom” was my 7th grade business mantra. My middle school snack store closed in the middle of the school year without warning, and this unfortunate development spurred the necessity to create a student run snack store. I knew there would be a large demand, especially in absence of any supply, so I decided to start an onsite snack store. With a $20 investment and a cost break edge of buying in bulk from Sam’s, I started my own business.
I determined when and where to sale and how to market Air Heads.
To create awareness and to build the brand, I had several of my football teammates create a word-of-mouth buzz. This cheap advertising eventually translated into huge demand. This early business venture would later evolve into a career goal of brand management which is similar to running a small business. Once my MBA degree is completed, I plan on leveraging my education and previous work experiences into a career of brand management.
I have come to a point in life that many people have not.
I have made a firm decision to recommit myself to pursuing my dreams. While there are those who believe that with an ounce of luck and a ton of persistence anything can be accomplished, I believe that there is no reason to expend so much energy and rely on luck. I believe in taking hold of my destiny and carving out a future for myself based on the decisions that I make in life.
Life is simply too short and too precious to be left to luck alone.
This is why I have chosen to apply for this MBA Course at this Prestigious University. Another event that built the foundation of my future career goals was the Super Bowl. The game itself was interesting, but I really looked forward to the commercials and how companies could creatively influence audiences in 30 seconds to buy their products. From then on, I knew that I wanted to embark on a career where I could use my creativity and innovation to sell and build a product brand.
In my current role with AC Nielsen’s consulting division, my current responsibilities include client facing interaction with domestic and international brand managers and analyzing data to help consult them on how to successfully create and launch new products, creating strategies on improving existing products, and forecasting sales for these products. Working with numerous brand managers across different types of products and companies, I have learned the best practices and what drives consumers’ buying behaviors.
My current work experience, my constant interaction with brand managers, and my marketing creativity passion from my childhood have driven me to a career desire in brand management. In my pursuit of a career in brand management, I have also witnessed the lack of staff diversity that is critical to optimal consumer product development and marketing. In my desire to work within the brand management industry, I have a parallel goal in desiring to influence to champion diversity at my company. While in college, I became a member of INROADS, an organization that gives minorities the opportunity to have professional internships while in college.
From this, I learned to never forget the opportunities that were presented to me as a minority professional, and to ensure that I help to contribute in building and maintaining a pipeline of talented minority youth into successful careers in corporate America. I am four years into my professional career and an MBA is the next logical step in furthering my education and preparing me to experience success at a senior level. Within my company, communications of senior level promotions are sent out via email.
After reading the biographies of the promoted, one commonality between these employees became evident; most of these individuals have MBA degrees. In my career to date, positioning myself towards a path that gives me the greatest opportunity to progress my career has been essential. Having an internship every summer at companies such as GE Capital and Burger King during my undergrad years and completing the management development rotational program at AC Nielsen are examples of the path that I have established for myself to build and grow as an employee.
An MBA will bring an abundance of new career networking and mentoring opportunities. After these latest years of professional experience and a desire to transition into a career of brand management, I believe now is the time to embark on my new educational path. My current work experience combined with an MBA degree will not only make me a valuable employee, but a resource that can successfully contribute and bring positive impact to an employer.
