The two plays Othello and the Duchess of Malfi were performed in the period of the Renaissance which it knew as (Early Modern), the word Renaissance means rebirth and it refers to a cultural and educational movement that begin in Italy in the fourteenth century. The English Renaissance was famous for it's drama plays. For the novella, Candide was written in the age of Enlightenment (the period of reason) in the18th century, and the writing was about travels and journeys.

In this essay I'm going to talk about the injustice against individuals.

The tragedy play Othello was written by William Shakespeare in 1603. Many characters in the play are treated unjustly and led to there downfall because of one character who manipulated the others for his own sake. Our fist character is Othello the main character was treated unjustly throughout the whole play by Iago who he was extremely selfish and did not think about the other feelings. Iago called Othello in the play as the Moor which it means (member of a Muslim people of Berber and Arab descent living in Northwest Africa) he was calling him that because he was a black man (…But for my sport and profit.

I hate the Moor..). Iago manipulated Othello in a way that let him to doubt his wife Desdemona that she cheated on him with Cassio, which Othello started to feel jealous from Cassio and killed his wife and later on when he got to know the truth he killed him self (…I kissed thee ere I killed thee, no way but this killing myself to die upon a kiss.

The second character is Desdemona, from the beginning of the play Desdemona was treated unjustly by her father when he treated her as an object which it belongs to him. She accepted her death and was treated unjustly from her husband whom he killed her because he felt jealous. Also, Cassio and Rodrigo where manipulated too by Iago for his own plane, he convicted Cassio to drink knowing that Cassio's vulnerability is getting mouthy when he is drunk, for Rodrigo he let him to believe that Desdemona will fall in love with him because of his money.

The Duchess of Malfi was written by John Webster and published in 1623. The Duchess herself suffered a lot by her two brothers Ferdinand and the Cardinal, they to tortured her because of her remarried to Antonio that’s what led to her downfall, she said to Ferdinand after he gives her a dead man hand which she thought it is her husband hand she said to him (…You are very cold I fear you are not well after your travel…) that show that her brother tortures her psychologically, physically and mentally.

For her husband Antonio, he treated in a bad way because he was not royal as the others and his class was not noble and his wife and his children got killed later (…My Duchess is sleeping now, and her little ones, I hope sweetly: oh heaven shall I never see her more?). For the poor mid-Cariola (the Duchess mid, knows everything about her) end up killed by Bosola because she got the Duchess back until the end of her life and because she kept her marriage secrete that let to her death unjustly (Hence villains, tyrants, murderers. Alas, what will you do with my lady?..).

Candide or the optimist is a French satire it was first published by Voltaire a philosopher of the age of enlightenment. For Candide this character suffered a lot from of the beginning of the novella, he first kicked out of the castle that he was living in it for kissing his love Cunegonde, he lost his love and suffered from the Bulgars and what they did to him, from the city of Lisbon until the last city he went to he went through beating, losing friends, getting back to some friends, he saw his love of life and lose her again when he finds her she becomes ugly, but instead of all this he still lived his life and accepted whatever happened to him. For Cunegonde this gorgeous girl who lived in a castle in with the love of her family, witness the death of her family by the Bulgar army, and she got raped and sold to men and treated as a slave, poor Cunegonde.

Pangloss the philosopher was hanged, beaten disseated but somehow he still thinks what happened to him was for the best (..I hold firmly to my original views, I am philosopher..). The old woman in my opinion her character was the saddest what happened to her just broke my heart while I was reading her story, she used to be a princess the girl of the Pop, from her fancy life to slave life, she got rapped and soled to men from one to another and taking her from one country to another she lived injustice life, she lived a very sad life, which in my opinion she did not deserve all of this.

To sum up my essay, the play Othello in my opinion did not succeed in criticizing the injustice because all the good characters in the play suffered to death and the one who did all this got away with it, for the Duchess of Malfi and Candide for me they both succeed in showing the injustice in the lives, the Duchess suffered a lot and the one who made her suffer become crazy man and in Candide, they all suffered but they somehow gathered together and tried to live there lives.
