Other than that, a physical therapist helps people to improve their mobility. If a patient having trouble standing, walking or moving, no matter what their age, a physical therapist can help them. The physical therapist will ask the patient to stretch and do strengthening exercises to help restore the patient’s ability to move. Physical therapists can properly fit individuals with a cane, crutches or any other assistive device. By developing an individual care plan, whatever activity that is important to an individual’s life can be practiced and adapted to ensure maximal performance and safety. People who recover from a stroke really need physical therapy for them to be functional again. Usually, people who suffer from strokes tend to lose some degree of function and movement. The physical therapist helps them to strengthen their weakened parts of the body and improve gait and balance. They can also improve stroke patients’ ability to go to the bed, move around the house without help from other people, they can be more independent around their own home, and reduce their burden of care for toileting, bathing, dressing, and other activities of daily living.
Besides, physical therapy helps people to recover from injury and prevent a sports injury. They understand how different sports can raise the risk for specific types of injuries such as stress fractures for distance runners. They can develop suitable recovery or prevention exercise programs for athletes to ensure a safe return to their sport. The physical therapist also can manage heart and lung disease. While patients may complete cardiac rehabilitation after a heart attack or procedure, they also may receive physical therapy if their daily functioning is affected. For pulmonary problems, physical therapy can improve quality of life through strengthening, conditioning and breathing exercises, and help the patient to clear fluid in their lungs by doing breathing exercises or percussion.
