Newspapers have become a staple in the world of mass communications. They have been around for generations and are not going out of print any time soon. However, this was the not the case in Deadline U.S.A. directed by Richard Brooks. This film follows a struggling newspaper that is on the verge of being shut down. It gave clear insight on how journalism can impact many people’s personal lives. The film highlighted how journalism can be dangerous in a crime filled world.
These aspects that are still prevalent in the newspaper industry today.
In the film, there is a couple who are divorced. Part of this reason is because the husband devoted too much of his time to The Day, the paper he was the editor for. I think it was a good idea for the film to include this because it illustrates how journalism can deeply affect the personal lives of all involved. One author notes how journalism can impact not only the journalist, but those around them.

It is written, “Journalists often cover graphic or horrifying events and sometimes feel overworked and overstressed. This also can take a toll on those they are close to — readers, co-workers, family members, friends or spouses” (Pate 2015 Online). This shows the challenges a journalist faces when trying to balance their work and personal lives. The film highlighted other important aspects that focus around this idea of journalism having an impact on personal lives. Some of these aspects still seen today include; journalists who get injured for wishing to run a certain story, people who work long hours to achieve deadlines, and people who are faced with losing their job.
All of these aspects are still found in today’s world. I think they are still relevant today because news stories now are just as big and in depth as those mentioned in the film. I did not realize how much time and effort goes into journalism before I watched the film as well. Regardless of what story the journalist is writing, it can deeply affect them and others on a much more personal level.
Similar to how journalism can affect personal lives, it can also be very dangerous. In the film, a journalist is badly beaten because he was following a lead on a man suspected of murder. I agree with the film for showing this because I believe it is still possible for something like this to happen. This concept of journalism being dangerous is still seen today. It is relevant today because many journalists go to great extents in order to cover stories, no matter what. While freedom of speech is the First Amendment and is granted in the United Sates, it can be dangerous to report some stories as seen in the movie. Freedom of speech is not always allowed all over the world. There have been many cases where journalists will go to a foreign country and not come back. It is transcribed, “Reporters around the world have been accused of terrorism, targeted as enemies of the people, and subjected to opaque and sometimes-secret legal proceedings” (Rezaian 2018 Online). This illustrates just how dangerous journalism really can be. Journalism is something that can definitely endanger someone’s life.
The film Deadline U.S.A. directed by Richard Brooks gives viewers a look into the world of newspapers. It opened my eyes to see just how intense working for a paper can be. I was surprised at how much goes into running a newspaper. The film touched upon aspects of how journalism affects personal lives of journalists and how journalists can sometimes be in danger while trying to report a story. Overall, the film gave an intriguing and realistic look at what can happen in the newspaper and journalism industries. It is important to realize and appreciate what goes into the newspaper we read every day.
