When tasked with the request to write again, I pondered the perfect theme for my compilation. I decided to begin with something profoundly meaningful—an essay encapsulating the theme "My Teacher, My Hero." Unlike the previous year, where the choice was a challenge, this time it was clear and indisputable. Everyone has that someone who serves as their anchor, guiding them through life's journey.
While for many, this guiding figure is a parent or friend, my experience was unique.
I found my pillar of strength in the form of a teacher—Engr. Elmerito D. Pineda. Teachers typically impart knowledge, providing opportunities for personal and academic growth. During my college days, Engr. Pineda went beyond the conventional role of a teacher. He became the unwavering support that I needed during challenging times, making a significant impact on my life.
I first encountered Engr. Pineda as my professor during my First Year in "Advanced Programming Languages in C." Initially, our interactions were confined to the classroom—lectures, quizzes, and exercises.
However, our relationship deepened when he became our thesis mentor in my Third Year. His support transcended the academic realm, extending to becoming the Alumni Tracer for FEU – East Asia College.
Despite the challenges of having a part-time mentor, both Engr. Pineda and I made concerted efforts to communicate and follow up on our projects. As the designated documenter, I took it upon myself to stay late, meet him after classes, and even attend his classes at FEU Main to ensure the progress of our thesis proposal.
Although we faced setbacks, including a failed proposal defense, Engr. Pineda's commitment to our mentorship endured. He stayed with us, providing guidance until the very end.
Engr. Pineda's unwavering support extended beyond the academic realm. He consistently checked in on me, ensuring my well-being. His belief in our group and his commitment to our success were evident. Even after transitioning to a different project and mentor for the third term, Engr. Pineda continued to inquire about our thesis and was among the first to congratulate us after a successful defense.
His commitment to being there for me, akin to Ms. Bong (Evelyn Ruth M. Manuel), never wavered. Even when physically absent, his presence was deeply felt. Engr. Pineda's steadfast support during both good and bad times has left an indelible mark on my life. Over time, he transformed from being a mentor to one of my best friends and a paternal figure in my school life.
His teaching style, characterized by patience and constructive criticism, has played a pivotal role in shaping my character. Rather than getting angry when mistakes are made, he employs effective methods to guide and teach valuable lessons. For all he has done, my only way to repay him is by offering reciprocal support. As he pursues his Doctoral in Information Technology next year, I look forward to supporting him, just as he has supported me.
While my life may never be perfect and will inevitably encounter the ups and downs of the human experience, one thing remains clear—I am blessed. Blessed to have guiding figures, blessed to be accepted for who I am, and undeniably blessed to have Engr. Elmerito D. Pineda in my life. Whether he is called a mentor, friend, or dad, he will always hold a special place in my heart. Engr. Elmerito D. Pineda, hats off—my 2011 would not be complete without expressing my profound gratitude for everything you have done for me.
