My Mother My Source of Inspiration

No matter how hard life seemed for me and my family, I have always looked on the positive end. When something went wrong, I would always just look on with a smile. The reason behind it will always seem like a mystery, but I believe that it is because of the strength that my mother has taught me. It may seem very cliché to say that my biggest influence is my mother, but I would be lying if I said she wasn't.

There are so many things that I don't think I would ever be able to do if it wasn't for my mother's words and for here constant push for me to do better and to dream larger.

She has always been there for me. We have never lived a worry free and luxurious life, yet I never saw it as bad. I always felt grateful for what we do have, and it's solely because of her encouragement. She never once told me that I was going to be anything but the best.

When I was younger, in elementary school, there have been several cases where my teacher claimed that I didn't do my homework. She would always make me call my mom during the middle of class, as if she is trying to embarrass me or put on a show. I would always cry. My mom always paid attention to what I said and always believed me, because, even if I did something bad, I never lied to her about school.

She would always walk to the school and meet with the teacher whenever I called. She never waited for me to come home to write a note or tried to schedule a conference; instead, she would just walk in. The thing that makes me smile, even to this day, is that she always let the teacher talk first. She would say things like, "She never does her homework," or "You need to pay more attention to her," and even, "I go through this everyday".

My mother would always just stand there, and the Spanish teacher would translate. She never said a single word as the teacher ranted on and on about my lack of discipline. The class would watch as well since my teacher never cared about taking it into the privacy of the hallway. She would always just say, “Get back to work". My mother would never say anything until the end, but when she did, she was not happy. She would always bring out my graded homework and ask if that's what she was what I did not do. It always was, This incident happened more than once, and it was always the same. I would always call home crying, my mom would come, the teacher would yell, and my mom would prove her wrong. It only took a couple of times before my mother yelled at the teacher and threatened to go to the principle if it happened again. She showed me to stand up for myself. I had always allowed myself to let whatever happened to happen because I did not want to disrespect anyone. I learned that, just because someone holds a higher position than you, that does not mean that everything they do is equitable.

However, she also taught me to stick with things even if it seems unfair. My mother and father both held down a job for a couple of years when I was younger, but as time passed, my mother was let go because of her immigration status. She became a house wife, and even though she didn't like it, she still did it. I would always come and talk to her throughout the day. We spent a couple of years in our small apartment before we moved into our current house, mostly because of the news that I was getting two more little sisters. Of course my mom would complain about our situation, but what normal human being wouldn't? This is around the time when the amount of work at my father's job started to decline. After a while, he was only able to go to work maybe once or twice a week. Then, he just stopped. Even though he no longer had a steady job, he still looked for any small jobs that he could do. He has worked in roofing for over twelve years, so he would do any type of roofing repairs or other types of repairs like siding and framing.

Even though this was my father's specialty, my mother would always help. There were even times when my father had gotten sick while on the job and my mother would keep working while he rested. They would come home tired, yet my mom would still go cook him something to eat. She would say things are not how she dreamed, but she always told me that my life would be better. I believe her, because our life is better than many others'. We have lived in a house with my uncle, shared an apartment with him, lived in one of my mom's friend's garage, lived in my uncles other apartment, gotten our own apartment, and now we live in a house. We have lived without heat in the winter various years, we've live without air conditioning, no hot water, no telephone, no cable, and no internet before. Even though we have gone through a lot, my mother would find a solution. She would say that even if life does not seem fair now, it will get better.

I love my mother. She is the force that pushes me forward. There were many times when I would be depressed and had a hopeless feel, yet I would think of my mother. I don't cry in front of others, just as she hardly ever does. She taught me to always speak of the future as definite. She taught me "I am" and "I will”, never "One day" or "I wish". She is my inspiration and my motivation.
