With the summer sun quickly approaching its semi permeant spot overhead, we’re looking at our new favourite travel destination for this Independence Day weekend. You want to make the most this long weekend, and understandably so (with the next major holiday almost two months away). We’ve got you covered, and by ‘you’ we mean every type of traveller out there. Nothing says weekend getaway like sandy shores, blue waters and luminous skies. Avoid crowds, find the perfect dwelling for your weekend voyage, and embrace the south Asian island nation of Sri Lanka, that has something special for every traveller.
Far and rare are the adventurers, a class of travellers who are willing to jump off cliffs, go deep sea diving and wake up at 7 a.m. to explore the unknown. If that sounds like you, Sri Lanka has an array of activities to pull you right out of your comfort zone and take you down the road less travelled.
From guided hikes through Horton Plains (Sri Lanka’s highest plateau) or a day spent learning to surf to a bicycle adventure through the Sri Lankan terrain; this south Asian island is home to some of the best dive sites in the world, like Hikkaduwa and Unawatuna (both of which are swarming with PADI certified dive companies) A little bit of the shopper lives in all of us, but there is a certain type of traveller, that’s thrives on an exceptional find. A classy hunter-gatherer, a collector of the unique and exotic: a breed that will not be disappointed by the abundance and quality of precious stones and gems in Sri Lanka.
Needless to say, it doesn’t hurt that the purchasing power of the Indian rupee is nearly double that of the Sri Lankan rupee. For the laidback vacationist, everything takes a back seat to relaxation. You’re easy going and find pleasure in the simplest of things, like golden sunsets and the calming sound of the waves. Sri Lanka’s immaculate beaches are recognized as some of the best in the world, with a few making FlightNetwork’s list of top 50 beaches in 2017.
The laidback vacationist is always looking to rejuvenate, a chance to kick back and be one with yourself. Zen activities like meditation and yoga, are just the right amount of physical activity for the long weekend. The history buff is a type of traveller, who strives to go beyond their own roots to understand the past and culture of a new place. Not very many places have as many Unesco World Heritage Sites as Sri Lanka’s whopping eight. More than 2000 years of rich culture is illustrated by ancient sites, remarkable temples and timeless ruins. One of the most intriguing visits, is Adam Bridge (a.k.a.: Rama Setu), a chain of limestone rocks between the south-eastern coast of Tamil Nadu and Mannar Island. Hindu theology suggests that this bridge was used by Rama to rescue Sita from Lanka. Interestingly, geological evidence implies that what remains, was a former land connection between India and Sri Lanka. Other tours like a Heritage walk in Kandy takes you through the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, the Lankatilake Buddhist Temple and the Gadaladeniya Temple, which is vastly influenced by south Indian architecture styles. Lastly the family vacationers. Travelling with children often requires special planning and treatment. You want to make sure your kids have a memorable holiday while keeping stress to the minimum. You’re the type of traveller that seeks kid-friendly accommodations and activities – thankfully you don’t have to look too far. With Sri Lanka in sight you will find yourself choosing between some of the most spacious yet affordable homes and activities like a Leopard safari in Yala National Park, a tour of the Smithsonian Primate Research Station or a visit to Minneriya – known for it’s Elephant Gathering.
