She wishes to lead Somalia from corruption and deep poverty, into prosperity and stability. The notion of running for president was welcomed by daily death threats, however, she still found support. From the eighteen candidates running for presidency, she is the only woman. Her campaign has already made an impact, prompting a broader discussion about the women of Somalia, sharing with the eleven million inhabitants that there is an unheard of path to prevent national insecurity. Dayib states, “I come from a society where women are almost nothing, not taken seriously, just waved away. Certain men actually feel scared enough to make these threats because they recognise that I have the capability to instigate change.” Dayib’s message shows the power of women within an unscrupulous patriarchal society.

Eufrosina Cruz is a Mexican activist, in hope of securing gender equality and rights for the indigenous women of Mexico. She sought to reform the Usos y Costumbres (Oaxaca), a law which prevented the participation of women in politics - employed from tradition. Eufrosina ran a successful campaign for in the village of Santa Maria Quiegolani in 2007, but male electorate officials destroyed all the electoral ballets that supported her campaign, all because she was a woman. This motivated her to form the Association for Gender Unity, Integrity and Equality of Oaxaca (Quiego), which recognises the significance of education people on how traditional gender roles can infringe the freedom and right of indigenous women who yearn to create a difference - challenging the political status quo. Eufrosina was later elected as the Federal Deputy of the Mexican National Congress.

Manal Al-Sharif brought awareness to her country Saudi Arabia, by simply driving. Footage of her driving went viral, as it was against the law at the time for a woman in Saudi Arabia to drive. She wants to provide awareness to the world of the human rights abuses of her home country. Last year, Saudi Arabia made it legal for a woman to drive, now Manal is fighting against guardianship laws, which require woman to ask for the permission of a man to do attend to basic household duties, like go to school. On the 25 April 2019, she stood outside the Saudi embassy in Washington DC holding a sign stating, “I’m turning forty today, and my son is still my guardian”. Sharif says that the reason the government has been able of oppress female population is because of fear. Manal strives for change in her home country.

These ladies come from various cultures, backgrounds and religions, yet they share the same belief, to create a brighter future. They find strength within the darkest times of their nations, acting as their leaders. As Manal Al-Sharif famously said, ‘The rain begins with a single drop.’ These women are leading their regions through times of drought, but when they rise to lead, the rain of freedom follows. They led their nations, supporting culture, diversity and tradition, through searching for an innovative future through times of crisis.
