A Doll’s House is a play written by Norwegian playwright, Henrik Ibsen in 1879. This play focuses on the relationship between Nora and Torvald Helmer. After reading the plot summary of A Doll’s House, I have learned that one must never give up, one should not commit illegal actions, and that men are viewed as superior to women.

Firstly, Nora finds out about her friend, Kristine Krinstine’s past and how much she has suffered. Krinstine tells Nora that her husband died and she was left with no money or children, but she never gave up. Krinstine also reveals that she alone had to care for her two brothers and her sick mother, but she did not give up and worked long and hard hours to take care of them all. Secondly, Nora also had a tough past; both Nora and her husband, Torvald were very poor and had to work long hours.

Torvald became sick as well, but Nora did not give up and tried everything she could to help Torvald recover from his illness. I have learned that one must never give up from reading the plot of A Doll’s House.

I have also learned that one should not commit illegal actions from reading the plot of A Doll’s House. When Torvald became sick, Nora needed money to fly them both to Italy so that Torvald could recover, but she eventually forged her father’s signature in order to borrow the money.

This was the cause of all the conflict between her, Krogstad, and Torvald in the play. This conflict ultimately led to the divorce of Torvald and Nora, which could have been prevented if Nora acquired the money non-illegally, such as borrowing money from the bank. I have learned that one should not conduct illegal actions from reading A Doll’s House.

The third issue that I have learned from reading the plot of A Doll’s House is that women are viewed as being inferior to men. Throughout the play, Torvald was always the one in control and made all the decisions between the couple. This was evident in the play when Nora was trying to convince Torvald to not fire Krogstad. No matter how many times or how long Nora tried to convince Torvald, he did not once think about the option of keeping Krogstad’s job at the bank. On another instance, at the end of the play where Torvald read the letter to Nora from Krogstad, Torvald immediately became extremely angry and declared that Nora will not be allowed to raise their children. The moment after, when Torvald receives a letter from Krogstad which returned Nora’s contract with the forged signature, he attempted to take back all he has said to Nora the moment before. This scene demonstrates that Torvald, the man, is treating Nora like she has no authority, getting angry when he wants and taking it back when he wants. I have learned that women are viewed as being inferior to men from reading the plot of A Doll’s House.

After reading the plot of A Doll’s House, I have learned that one should never give up, one should not conduct illegal actions, and that men are viewed as being superior to women in society. Firstly, Nora and Krinstine never gave up even though they were left with little to nothing and had to work long and hard hours everyday. Secondly, the fact that Nora had illegally borrowed money has ultimately caused her divorce with Torvald. Lastly, Torvald was always the one in control between Nora and himself. A Doll’s House teaches one many issues about women in our society.
