Lying to your leadership can have severe consequences for yourself, your platoon, your battery and the organization as a whole. One effect that lying to your leadership has on the organization is the loss of trust between each other. lies can change a relationship and make it unbearable for one or both people in a relationship. Trust is extremely important for a successful relationship. When someone trusts you and you betray that trust they begin to distance themselves. When you lose that trust the chances of the relationship falling apart or becoming toxic for both of you become high.
Once trust is lost it is hard to earn back. Once you discover another persons lies it is hard not to have the expectation of future lies from that person. You may begin to question everything they say. Being told the truth regardless of what it may be conveys that you respect the person you are speaking to. It proves to them that you place high value on the relationship and do not wish to ruin it by attempting to deceive them.
Telling someone the truth even though you know it may hurt them proves that you are willing to take responsibility for your actions. Lying does the opposite. As soon as this lack of respect becomes known it can put a lot of strain on the relationship and if allowed to continue it can cause the end of the relationship The main problem is that constantly having to be on alert for lies puts a strain on the conversations between yourself and others.
Eventually, the energy required will make others want to avoid you completely.
To add to all this thinking that you will be lied to again is going to make you more suspicious. When someone lies they are putting their own interest before others. Their lack of desire to make a sacrifice for the good of their relationship is another indicator that they do not place a high value on it. Lies can also show lack of regard for the other person. The moment someone realizes they've been lied to is unpleasant. When they realize the truth, they can’t help but feel foolish for believing it. Being made to feel this way by you eats away at all the positive feelings they may have towards you. This may cause them to distance themselves from you or it may simply cause old problems to resurface. Either way their view of you will be changed by the pain you have caused for them.
Another consequence of lying is that you are also often lying to yourself. In trying to conceal the truth from others you are refusing to show what you want or need. When they recognize this refusal on your part to commit, it is natural to doubt your desire to try to make the relationship work. This is the same for most types of relationships. It is not uncommon for one lie to lead to another. It may even be the case that you are a habitual liar who sees no real wrong in telling lies to other people in your life. Where one lie might cause repairable damage in a relationship, many lies will cause the relationship to fall apart entirely. Where lying becomes common, no relationship will survive intact.
In a work environment lack of trust caused by lies quickly erodes the relationship between yourself, your coworkers and your leaders. Many Nco’s may rely on you to get a task done properly.
When problems arise because that task was not completed properly everyone is affected by your lie. It increases their workload and dissolves any trust they had in you. When you claim tasks are completed in the future many wont believe you and may take extra time to confirm whether or not you are telling the truth. They may feel obligated to take time to make sure you are doing what you are supposed to do. This may even have an effect on your personal life as well. If coworkers cant trust or rely on you at work then how can they do so outside of work. With a job in the army personal relations with coworkers are important because you spend much more time working together and if deployed may even be entrusting your lives to each other. Lack of trust can be fatal in these situations. If they can’t trust you in the motor pool how can they trust you in combat?
Liars tend to lie multiple times in an attempt to prevent the first lie from being discovered. This is one of the greatest causes of distrust when it comes to lying. Once you lie everyone is ready for another lie to follow it up eventually. This string of lies continues and slowly chips away at trust until there is nothing left. At this point even when telling the truth no one will believe you. Everyone knows you lie often and they all are prepared for the next lie at any moment. At this point there is no trust and building it back up is extremely difficult. Trust is easily lost but not so easily earned. Being in the army and reaching that point can make your career extremely difficult to get through. Promotion and favorable action aren’t much of an option at this point and you will probably be lucky to get away without UCMJ action. Untrustworthy soldiers are a liability and can cause some serious harm to the unit. They make life difficult for their peers and their leaders and take time away from them that could be used to perform tasks and missions.
If a soldier is caught lying they might find themselves with much more unfavorable actions then they would have had to deal with originally. When lying you are usually just digging yourself into a hole and the more you lie the deeper that hole gets until eventually you cant climb out anymore.
Lying also has adverse effects on the liar themselves. Lying shows that you lack the courage to face the consequences of your actions. It also shows that you are incapable of taking responsibility for your actions. Lying also shows that you lack self-esteem or confidence. Those who tell the truth usually tend to have the confidence that everything will work out somehow or they just have confidence in the fact that they can handle the consequences of their actions and properly take responsibility. Liars are usually afraid of the consequences of their action and continue to lie to try and avoid them. They overthink situations and tend to think of the worst-case scenario. Other times they lie to avoid embarrassment or because they are afraid others' opinions of them will grow. By lying they are making the opinions of everyone around then worse. Nobody thinks highly of a liar and most tend to try and avoid them.
Telling lies causes a lot of stress as well, before and after the lies are discovered. They are constantly looking over their shoulders in fear of being caught in their lies. Often times liars have to remember the lies they've made to avoid being discovered and this puts a lot of stress on them. They are constantly on edge wondering when they will be discovered and how to avoid it. After they are discovered they deal with the guilt and feel stressed because of the bad image they have created for themselves. This is what makes lying toxic to the liars themselves. The stress can eat away at a person who doesn’t know how to properly deal with it. Liars are constantly dealing with stress due to their action and end up having adverse effects on their health and well-being due to it. These effects also affect their performance at work and can cause them to perform less effectively.
Distrust between coworkers causes work to be done less efficiently due to others having to check up on you to make sure you are doing what you are supposed to do, or because they are taking the time to verify that you properly finished the tasks you said you completed. Leaders will question you constantly because they are unsure of whether or not you are telling the truth.
Everyone will see you in a bad light. Nobody thinks positively of a liar. The possibility of being lied to makes others avoid liars. When speaking to other people they feel more secure when they know they are talking to someone who speaks truthfully. This has a great impact on your social life. Those who don’t spend much time with others and spend a lot of time secluded often end up with depression or high levels of stress. Lying can cause you to be ostracized within a group because of your lack of honesty nobody would want to converse or spend time with you. They would much rather spend their time with someone they feel secure around.
Once your caught lying news spreads fast. It doesn’t take long for everyone to know you’re a liar. That information could negatively impact your work performance and your ability to properly maintain yourself. The stress from the situation could cause you to feel hopeless and create a large amount of stress, which could affect your habits of being clean. It could affect whether or not you are willing to get up to go and walk a few blocks to grab some food or directly impact whether or not you have an appetite. It could affect your willingness to go to the gym and workout or to go out and be active. Lying can have severe consequences aside from punishments giving by superiors.
There are many liars who lie so much they start to believe their own lies. This has a serious negative impact on their mental health and causes a great amount of stress and anxiety. They will often think they didn’t do anything wrong and blame others for their “misfortune”.
Stress caused by lies and their aftermath can lead to being reclusive, which affects the physical and mental health of the individual. They may avoid seeking help, or even fear that there may be repercussions for seeking help. They may fear that when seeking help nobody will believe them. They may feel hopeless and believe that there is nowhere or no one they can turn to. Due to the results of their many lies. Which could cause them to hide their problems and slowly sit on them. This can cause a variety of problems as situations like these can cause severe depression. The refusal to get help will only allow the situation to slowly escalate.
One of the most troubling issues with lying is that nobody believes you a majority of the time. That causes you to expect no one to believe you when you speak regardless of the situation, which could make you avoid conversation or avoid contact with other people. There is also the accompanied feeling of shame that you feel when everyone knows you are a liar. This may make you want to avoid others or try to stay away from groups. This also may cause more stress which further increases the severity of the situation. Someone trying to regain the trust of others may find this all to be a huge obstacle and may feel that it's hopeless to continue trying and just give up on the idea. The regret that eats away at them after all of this can be a huge burden and is difficult to overcome.
Relationships at home and at work would get worse in this situation due to the stress the individual would be dealing with as well as their past as a liar. This adds more stress to the individual making it even more difficult to overcome. The feeling of helplessness would be a huge obstacle to overcome at this point and would severely affect the health and well-being of the individual physically and mentally. Being withdrawn from social activities as well as avoiding physical activities due to stress can take a great toll and may seriously affect their mental health.
Lying is harmful to both the one lying and the one being lied to. The trust issued caused by the lies make it difficult for the one being lied to believe you even though they may really want to believe you. This can be a cause of stress for the one being lied to. It also causes stress to those you work with due to their workload and maybe even the time they work being affected by you. For the liar the lies can seriously impact their mental health and the aftermath could cause some serious issues that would be extremely difficult to come back from.
The lies that add up can put a liar in a bad situation and when they finally do try to make improvements and fix their problems it may be too late or it could be extremely difficult. The hole they dig for themselves can get pretty deep. They may think they have a way out and before they know it they are trapped. This is why lying is toxic, it has a severe effect on everyone involved. It puts the liar in a bad situation and gives them a sense of feeling trapped and hopeless. Like they have no way out and nobody to turn to, nobody wants to believe the liar because of their lying habits. They miss opportunities to get help because of their fear that nobody will believe them. They dig a hole for themselves and sit in it feeling like there is nothing they can do to get out. This is why lying is a bad idea. It doesn’t do anyone any good. It slowly builds up until it’s become a serious problem for everyone. It may seem like no big deal at first but it builds up and it continues to do so. It is easy to lose someone's trust but it not easy to regain it.
Lying has severe effects on personal relationships. If you are married lies can create distrust. The more distrust you create the worse your relationship gets until it falls apart. When you meet up with new people none of them would want to be your friend if they were told you are a liar. Why take the risk? Lying creates a distance between yourself and others. Without trust, a relationship cant thrive. Lies break apart the foundation of trust and tear apart relationships. They cause stress, as well as a feeling of hopelessness. They cause anxiety and a fear of interactions. They cause mental and physical health issues and can make life miserable. There is no benefit to lying. With all the adverse effects that come with the lies that are told it’s clear that it’s not worth it. It’s not worth all of the stress, the loss of trust, the damaged relationship, or any of the other hardships that come with it. There is no gain in lying. Lying is toxic because it is capable of destroying anything around it.
The results of lying to your superiors can be extremely devastating if you don’t take action to change the habit before the damage is done. Often times most people would think “The consequences can't be that bad,” but most of these examples are long-term examples. When the lies start you slowly start chipping away at your trustworthiness, reliability, and your own personal image. It may take a while to cause serious damage with your lies but once the damage is done it is extremely difficult to repair.
Lying to your leadership has no benefit whatsoever. By lying you only dig yourself deeper into a hole making it harder to climb out. There are many negatives associated with lying. Loss of trust between yourself, your leaders, and your coworkers. Decrease in morale and unit productivity due to the lack of trust between yourself and your leadership. Your leadership and coworkers will constantly be suspicious of everything you say due to your history of lying.
There are many other reasons why lying to your leadership is a bad idea. One of the most important reasons however is that lying to your leadership proves to them that you have no respect for them or for their authority. This trend results in the creation of an unfavorable impression of you which can result in UCMJ action should the transgression continue to repeat itself, which could also result in receiving extra duty, forfeiture of pay loss of rank, and restriction to post or the brigade area (this includes the Dining facility and place of worship.) Should your leadership decide that you've shown no improvement or any intention of improving they can recommend you for chapter and have you separated from the army.
Lying can end your career and cause irreparable damage to your relationship with your leaders, peers, and subordinates. Lying makes you untrustworthy and unreliable resulting in your leadership refusing to rely on you to complete tasks and missions because of the high risk of failure associated with your lack of integrity. Other soldiers will refuse to work with you due to the possibility that you will drag them down and slow down the rate in which the work is completed. Even if you are a soldier who works hard to accomplish the mission your being untrustworthy gives you the image of someone who is unreliable and unmotivated to complete the tasks at hand. Your integrity plays a huge role in your daily work. Being untrustworthy has a huge impact on how others view your work ethic. Is he doing it properly or is he just trying to make it look like he is? These are the questions your leaders will ask themselves when you have no credibility. How trustworthy you determine how you will appear to your leadership and peers and affects your work environment for better or worse.
