Randy Shilts was an American journalist and author. He was born on August 8, 1951, in Davenport, Iowa, and died on February 17, 1994, in San Francisco, California. Shilts was the author of And the Band Played On: Politics, People, and the AIDS Epidemic, a work of investigative journalism about the AIDS epidemic in the United States. The book was published in 1987 and was adapted into a film of the same name in 1993. Shilts was also the author of The Mayor of Castro Street: The Life and Times of Harvey Milk, a biography of the first openly gay elected official in the United States. The book was published in 1982 and was adapted into a film of the same name in 2008.
