Life Changing Trip to the Maasai Mara

Categories: Free Essays

We are living in a world where people love to travel now more than ever. There are several types of travelers, some may wish to travel by themselves, and others may wish to travel with their friends and family. Some may travel to find a hidden piece of the world, and some may travel to find themselves. No matter which reason someone decides to travel, it boils down to the fact that they are leaving their comfort zone and creating a lifetime of memories they will never forget.

I had the opportunity to travel to Africa and stayed in the Maasai Mara it was an out of this world experience.

A few years ago, in 2015, I had the opportunity to travel to Africa I volunteered with one of those overseas wildlife volunteer programs. Stepping off the plane after two days of traveling was refreshing since I no longer had to sit in a crowded space with dozens of strangers. My first stop was Nairobi, Kenya, I learned about its history, and that It is a city that has been around for over a century and is still growing.

I spent the day there learning about how to live in this beautiful city. After leaving Nairobi, finally got to see the place I have watched on television since I was a kid, in person, the Maasai Mara. The Maasai Mara is one of the most beautiful places in Africa.

The people who lived in the Maasai Mara are vastly different from people who lived in other parts of Africa as well as the rest of the world.

The Maasai are nomadic people who live near rivers and mountains. Where they do not have running water accessible to them, they rely on their own resources for survival. Since they rely on themselves for survival, they have a magnificent powerful sense of community, honestly, it was the best part of the trip now that I am looking back on it. Some of the people in the village spoke little to no English, and if they did it was broken English. I did try to learn their native tongue, they knew how badly I was struggling and laughed at me a few times when I would butcher the pronunciation of a word.

It was such a beautiful once in a lifetime trip if I ever get chance to do the trip over again, I would pack better, but other than that I would not change my trip at all. I had planned everything I needed, but my family chimed in and said I must take extra blankets, a pillow for the plane, including everything in my closet. When I only should have taken half of the things I packed. In my case, packing lighter and sticking to what the website and the itinerary said I needed would be the only thing I redo on the trip.

From this amazing trip, I ended up learning so much and it has helped and changed me in so many ways. One of the most important things I had the opportunity to learn was how to be more confident while traveling by myself. I am a very introverted and shy person, who would rather go to the gas station down the street with someone else than go alone, I would just avoid it and push it off until I found someone to go with me. So, being in that fail or succeed entirely scenario, where I really had no choice to gain confidence and be confident by myself really changed me for the better. Taking this course and traveling helped me learn about the many diverse cultures and heritages around the world.

The trip was the best decision I have ever made in my life, it really taught me how to be a better person and more considerate for the people around me. It also taught me how to appreciate strangers and their kindness and their pure generosity to complete strangers. Taking the trip to the Maasai Mara was completely life-changing, I passionately believe it something someone should also do at least once in their life.
