Looking towards the future, 2050

According to UN-Habitat, today more people reside in urban as compared to rural areas. It is expected that inevitable climate changes may incur more millions of habitats to migrate to the city sites and in the year of 2050, nearly 80% of the earth's population might be living in urban centers (1).

Today's cities fail to meet even the minimum starters of self-reliance. No city lives within its own means. Everything consumed is produced outside the city, and as a result, waste accumulates at an alarming rate and natural sources on emergency (2).

2. Problem Statement

Most of the earth's impacted regions, especially the ones with the highest population densities are generally conceded to be unhealthy places to live; in which today almost more than one billion habitants are considered to reside along with the informal settlements or shantytowns.

Day by day these numbers continue to grow dramatically and cause to expose the urbanization of poverty.

3. Purpose of Study

The purpose of this study is to analyze the 'current status and future direction' of urban farming systems and analyze both the potential and the limits of the applications.

In order to achieve this twofold aim, the study will aim to understand the full extent of the documentation which contributes application methods in the urban agriculture by creating necessary design parameters.

The study has identified four key concepts to explain the potential of urban food production: feeding the world, waste control, productive slum improvement, vertical farms.

4. Background and Context

?

Production and grow for Green Future

Urban policies, design, and architecture are the keys that are considered to play a role in the quality of actual situations for influencing the various dimensions of manufacturing procedures and the inhabitants.

New policies to be developed on urban agriculture would be a sustainable and productive attempt which can precisely reflect varying levels of economic and social development.

?

As Dickson Despommier mentions, while the new technologies are showing us with the new proofs of the human spaces, we continue to urbanize without building cities that are not perfectly equipped to handle their populations.

Self-sustaining cities now would be the only solution which allow the land to heal itself, thereby restoring balance between our lives and the rest of nature (3).

5. Research Approach / Survey:

Engineers, biologists, farmer, architects and contractors will need to come together, exchange information and collaborate to resolve issues that might present themselves over the development of the project.

?

The study will consider the extension to the documentation which contributes to research for new application methods in urban farming and try to create the necessary design parameters that are required to enforce its usability.

The stating point will be a literature survey, followed with interviews of various representatives from organizations either operating on urban agriculture projects together with the shantytowns, or community development corporations. The research will involve case studies with examples chosen from the world in order to understand the sociologic reflections of the theme in different cultures.

5.1. Extension of Study - Vertical Farming

5.1.2. Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Computer Based Architectural Technologies

?

BIM models can be systematically integrated with identification and data acquisition on the vertical farming technologies. Most of the digital, physical and functional characteristics of facilities can be represented by a BIM model. Since BIM models include asset of lots of information, such as material resources and climate effects can be integrated with the schedule, cost information, etc (8).

5.1.4. Digitizing Materials - 3d Printing

3D printing technology can also be used to produce the vertical farming structures, materials and construction products. Moreover this technology can also be used to produce building materials on the actual construction sites. On the product side, there is the chance to develop new materials that feature high connectivity (9).
